Converting Hd Video To Dvd

We purchased a cannon HMF 31 camcorder and recorded in HD and would like to convert it to dvd in order to send dvd videos to relatives. Does anyone know of a freeware program that will allow one to convert the .mts video files to a dvd file, which I think would be a .vob file. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you computer didn't come with any of the programs!? i got windows vista laptop and it came with 3 different dvd making programs

This looks like what I was looking for. Finding programs to burn dvd's isn't really an issue. Finding free programs that can convert mts files to vobs that I can burn to a dvd is another story. Our camcorder came with software that is pretty much useless. Also, I was trying to avoid spending alot on a retail program.
