A. Little Annoyed

Im starting to see why my truck was traded in. The other day my voltage dropped to 12 and came up after a few minutes. Im my way to work just now it dropped again and my heat stopped working. She's blowing cold air so im off to the dealer at noon. Might aswell take advantage of that big warranty they pushed on me. Glad they did haha.

Well I bought the biggest warranty they offered and ive perfected my negotiating skills with my cell phone carrier so ill get it fixed. Plus ice only had the truck three weeks im still in that exchange it for something else period. Im more annoyed that this is my forth Gm visit in three weeks. Might aswell get them to look at the did the fuel consumption is way off

I don't know about the heat, but my last 5 new trucks had the erratic voltage

is this normal? my 2010 is doing that.. ranges from 12.3 to 15.2 and dealer says it's normal.. truck is only 3 weeks old.. I notice it more when the seat heater or coolers are running, seems to be very erratic then.

Yup its normal. When the battery doesnt need anymore voltage (charge) the alternator will shut off to conserve energy for a less load on the truck to save gas mileage. I thought my alternator was going out until I got on here and asked pretty much the same question.

..don't know much about these kind of details on the newer trucks but I do know that starting at some year (2004???) the alternators do vary from 12 to 15 volts depending on ...??

Subject: Information On Voltmeter Gauge Fluctuation Due To Regulated Voltage Control System And Concerns About Camper/Trailer Battery Charging

Models: 2005-2009 Cadillac Escalade Models

2005-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Silverado Classic, Suburban, Tahoe

2005-2009 GMC Sierra, Sierra Classic, Yukon Models

Voltmeter Fluctuation Condition:

Some customers may comment that the voltmeter is fluctuating between 12 and 14 volts on their full size pickup or utility vehicle. Starting with the 2005 model year, light duty full size pickups and utilities are equipped with a new Regulated Voltage Control (RVC) system. This system reduces the targeted output of the generator to 12.6-13.1 volts when in "Fuel Economy Mode" to improve fuel economy. The generator may exit "Fuel Economy Mode" if additional voltage is required. This will cause the voltmeter to fluctuate between 12 and 14 volts as opposed to non-regulated systems that usually maintain a more consistent reading of 14 volts. This fluctuation with the RVC system is normal system operation and NO repairs should be attempted.

Camper/Trailer Battery Charging Concerns:

Some customers may comment that when towing or hauling a camper/trailer, the auxiliary battery for the camper/trailer will not stay charged. In most cases, this concern is blamed on the new RVC system. While the RVC system does reduce the generator's targeted output voltage to 12.6-13.1 volts when in "Fuel Economy Mode", this feature is bypassed if the tow/haul feature is enabled. With the tow/haul feature enabled, the RVC system will stay in "Charge Mode" and the targeted generator output voltage will be 13.9-15.5 volts, depending on the battery state of charge and the estimated battery temperature. To keep the generator in the "Charge Mode", use either of the following two methods.

• The first method is to use the tow/haul mode when towing or hauling a camper or trailer.

• The second method is to turn on the headlights, which will increase the generator's targeted output voltage to 13.9-14.5 volts.

great. my battery low start vehicle light came on twice in the last week, both times truck was in acc mode for about 2-3 minutes, radio on, running lights im sure.. Hope that's normal too lol I have noticed the difference in the volt gauge from 12v to waaay up there looks like 15 or so.. sounds like we're all gonna pay the piper down the road, alternators, batteries, etc. gotta get "fancy", more features more problems no doubt

Thank you for this..

I have complained twice at the dealer about it and was about ready to go again, why the hell couldn't they just tell me this. all they said is "it's normal"

the tech said the same thing, said its normal and explainmed it the same way. im just pissed that the heat started to work again. i know its bound to break again and its just an inconvenience to have to keep gpoong to the dealer for little crap. oh well.

on a side note, the 6 headlight mod throws 2 bcm codes :)
