2010 Trailer Brake Wiring

I have a 2010 silverado and I found the wires under the dash for the trailer brake controller. They were clearly labled and the red and black wire that say "battery" is only hot when the brakes are applied.....so my controler turns on and applies the brakes whenever I hit the brake. But why is this Bat wire not hot/ign?

Is your controller Factory or after market?

No the fuse is good.

The controller is aftermarket.....(because stupid Chevy doesn't bundle the factory controller with the Max towing package......AND the dingbat dealer that ordered the truck didn't order it either!!! Hello! Max trailering! maybe one would want the brake controller with this truck!?!?!?....So I'm stuck with the knee bang POS version.)

and I can't get it wired right. Fuse is good, the other wires (brake light feed, ground, etc, seem right. just the Battery feed is somehow brake switched. Also the other two wires which should be brake switched are. So it seems to be just the hot wire that is wrong.

On my 08 HD, If you use an aftermarket brake control, there is a wire taped back at the under hood fuse center. This wire must be connected for the control to work.

Correct. There is a wire taped to a harness on the drivers side of the engine compartment near the firewall. It is long enough and has a wing on it that connects to one of the poles on the underhood fusebox

If your truck was not built with the factory controller, you must hook your aftermarket controller up to

the truck as follows:

Dark blue - Controller to trailer brakes

Red with Black stripe - Fused power feed to controller

Light blue with White stripe - Brake signal to controller

White - Ground

Orange - CHMSL (high mounted stop lamp) not used in most applications.

Then, go under the hood and locate the red wire that is taped to the harness between the

underhood electrical center and the fender. Place the ring terminal attached to that wire to the

larger of the two studs in the electrical center using an M8 nut. The fuse is already in the fuse

center for this stud.

do you know what the wire colors are on the controller? I know it sounds stupid, just trying to make sure i match the correct colors together

Nope. All controllers are different, refer to the manual that came with it.
