Sensor On Side Of Console?

I've read the manual but I can't see what this little grille is for on the side of the center console of my LTZ. I thought maybe a sensor for the auto climate control?

Maybe mic for speed compensated volume? I've seen that too, but have no idea.

Speed compensated volume has nothing to do with a mic, just the vss signal form the speed sensor. I'm pretty sure that's the hvac in cabin air temp sensor, it might have a little fan in it to. Does it make noise when the key is on?

I haven't noticed. I thought thats what the one in the headliner was for?

Not for speed compensated volume, for noise compensation.

From the service manual

A microphone mounted in the vehicle passenger compartment monitors background noise (such as wind noise from a window being opened) and digitally modifies the system’s volume and equalization to ensure optimal sound and performance. This option comes with RPO Y91.

Wow, I didn't know about that. I gotta give it to you wires, you called it pretty close. That would definately be a nice option, as with a stock radio, it's hard to hear with the windows down.

I've had the SLT/LTZ console completely apart multiple times and nothing is attached nor located behind this little grille. Unless the Y91 (Bose Centerpoint) option which is only available on Denalis and Escalades includes the speed compensation mic at that location which I am unsure of.

Also it looks like with that option (Y91) speed compensated volume is deleted.

With Speed Compensated Volume (SCV), the audio system will adjust automatically to make up for road and wind noise as you drive, by increasing the volume as vehicle speed increases. To use SCV, set the volume at the desired level, and then select either Low, Medium, or High. To turn SCV off, select the Off screen button. This option comes standard with the vehicle unless the vehicle is equipped with RPO Y91.
