Reuse Intake Gaskets

Recommended Posts

I changed out my intake gaskets 2 days ago which fixed my leaking issue but now it's throwing a knock sensor code. Bank 2 sensor is reading out of range on an ohm meter.

They were both fine before so I'm not sure what I've done but just wondering if I could reuse the 2 day old intake gaskets or not when I pull the intake again

You can try it but if they leak, guess what you'll be doing again.........

I always check knock sensors before I take those intakes off. That is, after I was burnt once, like you currently have been so I feel your pain.

I gotta agree. I'd spend the $50 for peace of mind.

yes, you can reuse the intake gaskets.

also, when you pull the intake, check closely, it's highly probable that you smashed the wire for the knock sensor under one of the intake runners, seen it more than once.

They sure have a lot of crush. The old ones were hammered flat. I guess I'll see if they rebound at all when I pull them. If not then new ones. At least it'll be nice and clean down there this time.

Thanks

Just a quick follow up.

Intake gaskets fully rebounded and were as new when removed. I reused them without concern and they sealed up tight.

What about the knock sensor?

I had pressure washed my engine last weekend in preparation to change out the intake gaskets due to a leak. I fixed the leak but started throwing a KS code the next day. Both sensors tested in range with an ohm meter before the gasket swap. Afterwards, one was reading low and inconsistant. I found the well for the rear KS filled with water and some corrosion on the sensor. I released the crimps and disassembled it finding corrosion inside of the sensor as well. There is an O-ring seal inside but I guess it won't withstand being immersed in water for periods of time. By cleaning it I was able to restore it's original resistance reading. I think if you were cheap and careful, you could reuse it but... Mine was $80 without having to wait for an online order to show up (I didn't buy before removing intake) but now fixed.

I would think you would be fine if, especially if you used the improved gaskets that are much thicker. By the way when you pulled the intake did you find there to be quite a coating of a sludge like substance in the intake runners and inside the intake manifold near the injectors? We changed out two gaskets, one on a 2002 Silverado 2500HD (61,000 miles) and one 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 (140,000 miles) and both has a substantial build up of this tar like subtance in the ports of the head. We cleaned them both as well as possible and they are both running better.

Pretty common with today's garbage gasoline that they sell us.

A top engine clean and good gas treatment will take care of that stuff and yes, the engine will run better. :)

My engine was surprisingly clean in the intake runners and head ports for having 200,000 kms on it. I cleaned some random crud from the intake but that was it. Even the backs of the valves looked reasonably clean.
