U-joint Replacement 1 End Or Both Ends

The rear drive-shaft u-joints, should the u-joints on both ends of the drive-shaft be replaced even when just one of them is bad? I recently had to replace the rear u-joint (rear differential end) but did not replace the front u-joint (transfer case end) because it was not bad. However with 165,000 miles the front u-joint is much more free (loose) feeling than the new rear joint. I thought I read somewhere that you should replace both at the same time so thought I would ask the experts.

It can't hurt but usually, if they feel good, I leave them. I've never seen an aftermarket joint last as long as a factory one.

 

BTW, while a new joint may feel tighter, make sure it is moving freely. If it is not centered in the shaft properly, it will bind and wear out quicker.
