2500hd Locking Itself With Keys In Switch

I went to my dealer, Pohanka Chevrolet, on Thursday have had a very pleasant experience. They had sent me a cupon for Maintenance II @ $79.00. I use Mobil 1 5W30 and they charged $30.00 extra and told me I could bring my own oil next time. $25.00 @ Walmart is cheaper than their $30.00.

I had three complaints -- my locking tailgate latch doesn't want to open a lot, the left side of my trailer plug didn't have any power, and sometimes, just out of the 'blue', the truck will lock itself. While the service writer was writing it up, the truck locked itself with the keys in the switch.

They installed a new tailgate latch and replaced a fuse which fixed the first two items, but after researching tech advices and bulletins, they could not find a solution to the truck locking itself. I guess I will have to carry two sets of keys everywhere I go, or make sure I take the keys out of the switch every time I get out of the truck. Have any of you'se guys had any experience with your truck locking itself with little or no advance warning?

Look down the page at Mcueva's post and read the bulliten description.

There is a bulliten but it is extremely vague (despite how it may look to you). Without even looking for a bulliten it sounded like a class 2 issue to me. Problem with that is if it is intermittant there is literally thousands of things that could pull the line down and cause odd issues. Finding a needle in a haystack is easier then finding an issue on the data line that is intermittant. An extremely competent electronics tech could easily spend a whole week combing over the data line doing various tests and still not find anything that is out of the ordinary.

This is never happen to me , only maybe many many years ago I accidentally locked keys inside. I have a very good habit of when keys are in the igntion and I have to get out of the truck I leave a window open with a big enough gap to reach in and unlock the door. I am always paranoid that something like that would happen to me. If you happen to get down to the problem as to why your truck would out of the blue lock itself, please post your findings.

Heh, I have a 2011 2500 and tried to do what I used to do on my older GM trucks. When I would park, I would pull the key about halfway out of the ignition so the dinger wouldn't go off. Got out, shut the door and started to walk away...click....my doors locked themselves. WTF...good thing I was at home with a set of spare keys. Won't ever do that again!

just for sh@ts and giggles. do you have the door locks set to lock automatically when you get to 15mph? if you do, trysetting it to not lock at all. just an idea. good luck.

The automatic locking system is set to lock when the gear shift lever is taken out of Park. I'd rather have my doors locked and put up with the random surprise locking than to not have them locked. My dealer's response to the problem was something like the reply from "Sparkstech" above. When I drive, I carry two sets of keys, one with the remote and one just plain door key in my wallet.

Other than the locking problem, the dealer fixed the only other problems -- locking tailgate latch and trailer power plug -- I have incurred. I got the truck back in March and will go past 36,000 miles during the Christmas holidays. I have been on three cross-country trips with camping-hiking gear in the box this year and usually get 16+ miles per gallon on the overall trip per the DIC. The first one was 9,200 mi, the second one was 6,430 mi and the third was 6,270 mi. As long as I keep the RPM's below 2,000 [just shy of 70 MPH], mileage is good, over 2,000 RPM's and the mileage goes SOUTH in a hurry. The overall trips also include a lot of driving in 4-WD while in Utah and Colorado.
