it's been raining consistantly for 4 days here in Los Angeles.. I captured this on my dash cam this morning:

WTH is this fool doing, aside from wasting fuel? I "might" understand if it was a City Government vehicle, but my city contracts to a 3rd party for street sweeping, way to rape the tax payers.. freaking idiots.

I don't know what your street cleaners do in Cali, but here in Ohio, they don't just make the road wet. They also sweep up debris, such as bolts, paper, and other trash. If anything, I would think doing it in the rain is more efficient, as you could use less water to help sweep everything up.

lol, that might be true IF he was running with the rear vacuum brush down.. but look at the image (ok admittingly it is hard to tell in the image), all he was doing was running the side brushes and spraying mud and water into the street.

Where did you get the dash cam? Did you put it in yourself?

here is my thread on it:

I actually fliped that hanging piece back 180 degrees so it doesn't sit so close to the window and it is up and behind the mirror so it's not a distraction while driving..

I put it in after as stated in that thread, my mom had an issue with someone who ran a stop sign and t-boned her and the insurance wanted to argue who was at fault due to conflicting statements..

luckily in that case we got the crossing guard to be a witness, but after that I decided dash cameras for all the cars.. just a little peace of mind in a world full of moron drivers that can't tell the truth.

From what I can tell in the picture, it's a Tymco airblast sweeper. It doesn't have a broom in the back. It has a pick-up head with rubber curtains. There is a big impeller that blasts air from one side to the other, where it's sucked up. Are you saying the pickup head was up while he was driving around with his gutter brooms on? The only reason to raise the head while operating is if you have to back up. The arms that hold the head will fold if you reverse before raising the head. He may have been "ghost sweeping", trying to look like he's doing something. It'll sweep pebbles/rocks just fine in the wet, but it won't suck up fines like sand. You also have to dump the hopper a lot more because it will suck water like a mofo. I've have lots of sweeper stories.

I cant tell or say what the heck the guy is doing! but i dont know whats worse: trusting that hes doing something work related or tax payers paying more for service so the subcontractor can put GPS in all the work vehicles and then paying someone to monitor the employees movement, in case someone complains that their street isnt getting cleaned or plowed.

Sorry for rant! Im a city employee and dang if I cant even stop for a coffee anymore in a work truck, i almost need to wear a suit under my jumpsuit and quick change like supeman after parking the truck a few blocks down!

Having worked for a municipality for just a little under a year, I can try and give you a little insight.

1. Don't need to man up a water truck, and you don't waste water.

2. Not sure how much debris is on the roads there, but in Fort McMurray, if we don't go out sweeping when it's raining.. all the junk that's on the road will just clog the storm drains.... more tax $ wasted

3. Not sure if it applies where you live, but in some cities they have an allotted budget for road maintenance, and in most cases it's use it or lose it. Any excess money left over will be taken off of next years budget.
