Battery Question...

When I first start my truck, it shows a good 14+V. After running the truck for 20 minutes, it shows less than 12V. The truck, 2006 GMC Sierra SLE 5.3L, has 135,000 miles, original battery. New alternator put in two weeks ago.

Is this normal? If not, and I need to replace, is there any special procedures I need to follow to replace it? (i.e. put key in position run position when I re-connect battery terminal).

Never have ign. switch on when connecting battery or jump starting, doing so will cause a surge and can destroy electronic components. $$$$$$$
