Anyone with clear tails

Well, here in the wonderfull land of high taxes, New York for the rest of you.  Vehicle inspection time is upon me.  Registration expires on the 9th, so I have to have my truck inspected.  Nothin major, but I found out the hard way last year.  If you have clear tail's, make sure you put the originals on, or they'll fail the rig. Pissed me off.  Had to drive about 20 miles round trip to change them.  Thankfully, I didn't get rid of them.  So if you live in a state where you have to put up with this sort of B.S. make sure you change the tails.

On a side note, on the inspection form, there are all sorts of things they have to check.  One of which is the windshield, which I understand they must check.  But there is actually a line to check if the windshield is MISSING!  In NY the registration and inspection stickers go on the windshield, so if there is no windshield, where are they gonna put the sticker?  And it wouldn't be on the form if some imbecil tried to get a car minus a windshield inspected.  ####, people are stupid. :urgent:

 I thought here in NM was bad... There are people here who have vehicle issues so bad that it would cause those NY inspectors to kill themselves, though. :jester:

If Clear Tail-lights would fail your vehicle, why is it worth even putting them on?  Don't cops pull you over the other 362 days of the year and give you an oppurtunity to contribute to local government?  ???

My boss has clear tails.  They told him when he got his inspected that it's legal here in WV, as long as you get ones that use the original wiring and don't have to change the wiring at all.  But they didn't believe him that the ones he got were like that.  So he went somewhere else, and they passed him, b/c they knew what to look for and knew they were the right kind.

Wiring?  They should just be the lenses with the factory wiring harness/socket/bulb plugged into it.   ???

That's all his is.  Apparently there are some out there that require you to change the wiring alot, he checked around before he got them, and made sure he got ones that didn't.  After the inspection incident he was really glad he had.

Mine are fit better than my stock one's did actually!  And on the cop issue.  I don't give them a reason to pull me over!  I obey the speed limit, with in say 10 mph, and I don't swerve or change lanes often.  I think it's like the window tint issue.  You have to "break" some other law in order to get busted, or be under 19 or so.  But I guess if you give em a reason, they could pull you over for anything.

Very true.  I had the black headlight cover, taillight covers and a tinted license plate cover on my black '91 for about 5 years with no problem.  I got pulled over for speeding one time, and the officer said since he had me pulled over he wanted to let me know that all three of those were illegal (which was no shock, I seen the "for off-road/show use only" on the packages.  :P ) and he could give me a ticket for $60 for each of them, plus the speeding ticket.  Luckily he didn't give me one al all, just got a warning for the speeding.  While he was there, I asked how often he pulls people over for the covers, and he said never, unless they are pulled over for something else, like speeding.  I took the covers off right there and just put them in my tool box and he told me not to get caught with them on down the road or he would give me a ticket.

Almost a year later, a friend of mine was using my truck to pick up a riding mower on a trailer for another friend, and was pulled over for not having safety chains on the trailer.     He said it was the same officer, and when he came up to the window, he stopped for a second, then walked to the front and glanced at the grille.  My guess is he remembered the truck and was checking for the covers.  :D

After about 1 1/2 years of driving without them on, I ended up putting them back on anyway.  :D

    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
    • Like others have said, they will all leak. Mainly at the corners.   I have owned several and the best has been my current one. Revolver x4
    • About 8 months after an alignment job by the dealer I started experiencing a pretty significant clunk in the front end on hard left hand turns usually parking lot speeds almost at lock.  Occasionally get the same on hard rights too.   Discovered that the lower control arm attachment bolts are TTY and only to be used for a single use. And then I found some evidence of a TSB that indicates you can over torque those fasteners to about 130 foot pounds.   Asked a local shop to investigate and they found 3 out of four bolts loose and retorqued.   I've ordered the MOOG    K100421 lower control arm bolt kit that is completely reusable and not TTY.    Is the 80 ft pounds a realistic number?  Anyone have experience with those bolts?
    • subscribe to alldata.com, that will have gm's brake bleeding procedure.  and what you have to do likely varies, as if you just replaced a caliper and the MC didn't go dry, you most likely can just do a normal bleed on that corner, but if you disconnected lines at the MC or the abs unit, or let the MC run dry while doing work, you'll have to do a more extensive/complicated bleeding procedure.
