Is There Such Thing As Too Much?

I know in stick shifts certain gears can only go so far on the power curve without redlining the motor or dogging it(5th going 5 mph), is their such thing as too high of a rev/rpm for some of the gears in an auto? the reason i ask is if i get on my truck a little bit i can easily hit 2k(rpms) in 2nd(maybe 3rd, i'll have to count the shifts again)

Is that seriously a question? You can redline your truck in any gear if you WANT to. If you're worried about 2k RPMs, I don't even know.

it was an example...i'm just wondering if there is the possibility of too many revolutions to a certain gear...i know in a stick you can rev to the limiter but in autos i wasen't sure if it had safety perimeters

*ahem* Mine go well over 3k if I get on it, which I do, its good to open it up once in awhile!

Have you never floored it? jeez

edit:nevermind didn't see your real question, no floor it and you'll see if theres parameters haha

Yes, there are safety parameters in an automatic, it's way safer than a manual in every way. If all you can get is 2k when you "get on it" you need to have it checked out. Mine goes almost instantly to 4k or so depending on speed, then works up until near 6k where it shifts.

i drive like old people ****, i don't think i've ever taken the truck past 2200 rpms lol...the thing is perfect now, no oil consumption or anything and im scared if i get on it too much i'll cause issues

i have a 99 silverado 5.3 4x4 dont know what gear ratios i have on it i bought it like that a month ago.. with 35" tires... anyway... whenever i step on it my truck revs up all the way to 6k rpm in every gear... and what i can tell you from other cars i've own in the past.. is that the best way to get all the power u can from an automatic transmision is to rev it up all the way to the red line in every gear! i had a 95 cougar that if i step on it in Drive it wouldnt go all the way up in the rpms and barely hit 120mph... but if i step putting it in 1st then 2nd then Drive and then turning on overdrive (4th gear) reving it all the way to the red line in every gear... by the time it got to 4th gear my speedometer was way past 120mph! dont know exactly how much cause it only showed up to 120mph but it kept going up.. so i guess the best way to run in an automatic transmision is to rev it up all the way to the red line in every gear and u wont harm your engine or transmision...

Thats awesome, I too also like to mat the gas to the floor

There are times, when I think of ramming my right foot straight through the floorboards

I was raised on V8s and always told you have 8 cylinders use all 8. I don't p**** foot around when merging into traffic. If I don't want to wait and I see a hole my right foot gets slammed into the floor board and people up to 2 miles away hear my truck scream as I get up to speed. Depending on conditions the tranny shifts between 5500 and 6000 rpm. Can you over rev an auto? Yes by turning it into a manual and setting the highest gear (i.e. 1,2,3 instead of drive, well for you 4sp people anyway). If you leave it in drive and everything is working as it should no the tranny will shift when it is good and ready be it @ 2k or 6k.

i have been laying the hammer down ever since i got my 2001 silvy with 40,000 miles on it. 83,000 now and i still lay the hammer down almost every time i get in it. no engine problems ever. i think you should worry about the tranny if something, not the engine.

so i take it a tune removing the rev limiter like i have probably would not be good for you?

You cannot overrev an auto (modern cars). They are all computer controlled. If you put the gearshift in 1 and mat the gas, one of two things will happen. Either the tranny will shift on its own into 2nd, or the engine will cut power at the redline depending on how things are programmed. Even if you grab the gearshift at 150mph and drop it from D to 1, not problems. These things are designed for the weakest link (i.e. the joker who tries to do this or worse, jam it into reverse or park). Dropping a manual tranny from 5 to 1 doing 150 = another story. I totally agree with you on using all 8 cylinders. If you aren't going to use 'em, why buy 'em! I have a similar philosophy (which it sounds like you would agree with) for those who complain about the gas mileage of their V8 pickup or SUV which has the aerodynamics of a brick, I tell people "Should of bought a Prius is you expect Prius gas mileage!"

The LS engines like to be run at much higher RPMs than what our stock trucks unleash. You are not hurting it below 2,200. In reality, it's more like keeping a beast locked in a cage.

Not sure I agree 100% with the 'ok to drop an auto into 2nd' at high speed comment. I think if you do this with a 2009 truck with 4L60e, you'll still get 2nd and the electronics can't prevent the downshift into 2nd gear. My math says doing is above about about 87mph will get you eng speed above 6000 rpm with a 3.73 axle. In the more modern transmissions (and maybe this is what you were refering to) like the 6-speed that's now in the trucks, I think your statement is spot-on.

If you're going a high speed and shift into second or first like you said, the tranny will only shift into a gear that is safe. Same thing with reverse, you can be running down the highway and shift to reverse and it will not do anything until your speed is slow enough.

I down shift my tranny on hills, and this is true, ALTHOUGH it does jerk the hell out of you if your going at a good speed! Dropping into 2nd that is.
