UPD Intake and Gas Milage

Removed UPD intake and reinstalled original intake but left the K&N installed. I have run one tank and find 16.7mpg and the performance gain I felt with the UPD is almost all still there, so the K&N filter must account for the majority of it.

I'm sticking with the original intake and the K&N filter for a while to see if this latest tankful was just a fluke. I hate to think I may have wasted a couple of hundred bucks on the UPD, but if this mileage holds up, I guess I did.

I'm on my second tank without the UPD. So far, just watching the fuel needle and miles on the odometer, I can tell I'm getting better mileage  without the UPD. I won't have the numbers till I fillup again.

I'm hanging on to the UPD till my findings are confirmed. If the mileage holds up, I'm giving the thing away to goldnrod24 if he still wants it then for the price of postage plus one beer.

Not to wish you any more grief, Blue, but I'm crossing toes and fingers that you continue to experience mileage gains!!!

To tell you the truth, mileage is not my concern, I'm looking to get rid of that big ole honking ugly air tube under the hood.

My checkbook is ready, just give me the word!

I am new here so please bear with me...I have an '02 Avalanche with the 5.3...I installed the UPD and K&N standard filter...I seem to have lost about 1MPG...not sure myself here but I DO like the increased V8 growl...I tried the UPD with the stock paper filter and my Av pinged on WOT/PT...I am VERRY interested in your findings...KEEP US POSTED!!!

This is what my reasearch showed me on the UPD. I dynoed my truck with the K&N FIPK and then the UPD 2 months later in 5 degree warmer temps. No other mods were done between the two dynos.

K&N = 255 rwhp / 260 rwtq

UPD = 261 rwhp / 270 rwtq

I had an Airraid before the K&N, and dynoed at 247 rwhp in 40 degree weather. But there were a few mods made between the Airraid and K&N, not to mention it was in the mid 80's on the K&N and UPD dynos. My gas milage really has not changed between the 3 of them. Driving habits, temp and stop and go traffic all play parts in MPG. But overall, I still avg in the upper 18's and will still get 20-21 mpg on full blown highway trips at 70mph.

??? Those are some rather good mileage #s... Dont you have 3.73s as well???? Dont get me wrong, cause Im not disbeleiving you at all.... Its just that in my single cab, 4.8, with 3.42s, with a cold air intake, TB spacer, and even when I have my exhaust open I never see above 14 in town and 18 hwy... Normally though I get 13 or so (gotta show them hondas whats up :thumb: )

I have seen Fast4.8 around the boards alot and I respect your opinion. What I would be interested to know is what mpg you got bone stock if your truck ever was bone stock long enough to check it. My guess is that it gets better mileage now with all the mods and even with the taller gears.

Almost...unbelieveable. Maybe slamming and ground effects give you some aerodynamic edge.

-My truck will never do what your truck does. I can't see averaging high 18's and hitting 21 on the highway consistently. If I have to spend a few thousand in mods as you have to get it, it would not be worth it to me.

-My truck does not like the UPD and it is IMO the best possible intake to put on.

-My truck will not see the mods yours has. I will never go to the track and find out how fast how quick.

-I remain the proud owner of a classy GMC in bone stock (performance wise except for the K&N filter) shape. It does exactly what GM said it would do, it does it well and with plenty of power stock.

When I fillup this weekend, I expect to see better mpg stock than with the UPD and I will not miss the probable 5hp the UPD made. If in fact my mpg is near 17 or better, goldnrod24 will be getting an e-mail asking for his mailing address.

I averaged 16.5-17.5 when I was stock. Your right about it not being stock for long LOL :flag: My stock tire still have the blue walls on them. :thumb:  Your right about my mods, I do have a lot. Most notable, the "very open" exhaust. Headers and such. Consider, that what I call daily driving is still 70/30 hwy/city. So if I ran better than 70% city, I would expect my milage to be in the 16-17 range. And that great number will probably be going down next year with the ..cough..new X.X motor going in.  No ground effects on the truck though. Matter of fact, it's going on a diet, bumper, hitch, and any other thing I can unbolt for the track. My track time will be taking a more serious turn in 2003. I think I still have a 13.xx pass left on the stock short block. Then its time to get real. Man did I ever get of topic...Sorry.

Not at all Fast4.8. I always enjoy your posts and get alot out of them. Very interesting and no matter what changes you make to your truck, you seem to do it tastefully. More power to you.
