Starter Install Question

I'm new to this forum, and any help would be much appreciated.

 

First my truck is a 2001 Tahoe k1500 and I recently had my starter not want to work. After jumping the battery with my cousins truck, it started easily. And then removing my battery and placing in my cousins truck, the truck started immediately. I figured the starter and the battery are working fine. I haven't heard of replacing cables too often but that's what I decided. New cables are about two hundred bucks (at the Dealer) and my mechanic told me 2 to 3 hours to R&R = about three more hundred bucks. So I thought I'd do it, I have the cables replaced but can't seem to get the starter back in place. The block casting is in the way. There's a alignment hole (that's part of the block) that is about an inch from the bell housing and blocks the starter from aligning with the bell housing on a straight in path. Is there a special way that the starter has to go back in to align? Or do I just have to work at it until it twists back in place? Any suggestions?
