Annoying Rattle

Recommended Posts

My truck just developed an annoying rattle this morning. It appears to be coming from the driver's side a-pillar area. It might also be coming from the cluster or dash part above the cluster. I first thought something was wrong with the small speaker on the pillar. I tried pushing on the dash and cluster, but I could not fix the sound. I've used the search and read through many similar posts with this sound, but I didn't see an actual resolution to it. The truck has 7,500 miles on it, and the temperature was 35* this morning, but this is the first time it has occured. I hate to take my truck to the dealership for a rattle so any past experiences or advice is appreciated.

I had an annoying noise that I had a tough time locating. I pressed up on the header above me by the light and...gone. Release...noise...press...gone.

So I dropped the light and looked in. Between the header and the roof is about an inch space and there is a rectangular piece of foam. It has a a sticky back that sticks to the roof. It's supposed to stay stuck to the roof. I gave it a gentle pull and the the sticky back releases and there's the noise.

When driving the truck, any bump makes this piece unstick. So the jostling of the truck and normal driving seems to push/pull this piece off the roof over and over. Stick/unstick stick/unstick. What I did to remedy it was place a much softer, slightly thicker piece of weather stripping in front of it and now the piece is permantly unstuck to the roof.

I haven't had that maddening noise since. Don't know if this is what you might be hearing but many times cabin noises are referred and seem to be one place but are actually somewhere else.

My problem wasn't a rattle but thought I'd share.

I have been getting a similar rattle for about 6 months on my 08 Silverado extended cab. It seems to be coming from the area just above the headlamp/4WD switches and behind the dash vent outlet. Tried giving it a swat on the top of the dash with the truck parked and I did hear the same rattle when the truck is moving.

It sounds like a loose bracket or some component that is held in place by a self-tapping screw or bolt. I have a feeling that it will be a royal PITA to get up under there and find the problem.

mine does it, but for some reason it only does it when im backing out of the driveway on a cold morning... if i put my hand on the right side of the guage cluster (above the voltage and temp guage i think if i remember right) and it stops.

I've got the same problem with mine as well (08 Sierra Ext cab). Like Jeff asked, was the assembly hard to get out and how did you do it?

I believe he is referring to the map lights or the dome lamps. They both will come off pretty easy with a small pocket screwdriver prying gingerly right on the lens. The map lights towards the front of the truck and the dome lamp towards the passenger side. (just changed all of the bulbs!) I also isolated a very annoying noise to the seat belt mounting point up and behind the driver's head. The metal buckle bangs against the plastic trim panel......

Are you saying the whole light assembly comes out by taking the lens cover off. Seems to me like you wouldn't be able to see up inside the roof paneling just by doing that. Mine seems to be by the dome light.

There's a rattle coming from the pillar in my 07 Silverado Excab I figured may have something to do with the seat belt mech. But giving it a few jurks hasn't done anything to stop it. And sorry to say I haven't pursued it to give any info on may be causeing it.

On the center dome lamp the whole light will come out in two pieces. The lens interlocks with the housing and holds it into the roof liner at the same time. If you pry on the lens gingerly from the passenger's side you will see what I mean.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
