I Need Some Advice

I have a 1500HD and want to borrow my uncles 35ft travel trailer. The GVW is 9600 (unloaded i think). It is a standard trailer hitch trailer(not a fifth wheel). Anyways, I have the stock hitch and need to know if I need to buy a Class4 hitch or can I use the stock hitch? Should I also get a trans cooler and brake controller too?

I have never towed anything this size or weight, just 14ft quad/dirt bike trailers.

Thanks in advance folks!

DEFINITELY going to need a brake controller installed... Your 1500HD should physically tow it (I'm assuming it has the 6.0L and 4.10 gears?) but stopping that rig is just as important. Your truck brakes won't be enough on thier own.

As well... Your hitch should be fine, however you should use the proper additional equipment like weight distributing bars, and sway control. Are you towing this thing far?

How do I find out what gears I have? It will be towed from 120-275 miles each way.

As well, your "official" towing capacity should be listed in your owners manual... I have it listed at 8,300lbs to 10,400 lbs.. depending on equipment.

The GVW=9600 lbs on the camper should be *fully* loaded. If not, that would be a "dang heavy" tag-along. GVWR on your truck should be a good match (~8500 lbs iirc). You will need a WD hitch system on the trailer, which I assume your uncle already has?

Thanks guys. The sticker in my glove box had gt4 and gt80. So I have 3.73 gears and factory lockers? BTW it is a 2x2 if that matters

    • New to this forum.  Also looking to tune a 6L80 and trying to work out all the issues in my transmission swap.  I have a 6.2 diesel (1983) and have removed the TH-400 and about to put in a 6L80 with a TCM-2600 interface and don't have a clue what I doing after that.  Did you (Leatherneck/RAV3) get your slip resolved? I too hate to spend that kind of money on a tuner that hopefully I will not need too many times although from what steelerdude15 added about the HP Tuner being great for diagnostics would be a plus.  I am also from WNC but below you in Columbus.  Any helo would be greatly appreciated.
