New Truck Trailer Wiring

Recommended Posts

So I finally took delivery of my '11 Crew Cab Sierra with the 6.2L Blue and Cashmere. I'll post some pics before the tonneau cover, tinted windows and Line-X. Basically day of deliver (5 weeks BTW).

Anyways, I am installed LEDs in the bed and could not figure out why the 12v hot at the trailer plug was not working. Then I remembered that GM doesn't hook it up at the fuse block. Opened the hood, found the coiled up wire, connected it, put a fuse in, checked with a test light and power is good at the wire in the engine bay. Still not 12volt at the plug. Does GM switch this through the ECU and I need to have the ECU told this, or is there another harness somewhere that needs to be plugged in? It came with factory trailer brake FWIW.

Did you hook up the right wire?

page 8-13

there are 2 one for the trailer plug and one for the brake controller.

I guess not. There was something already tied into post 2, I assumed was the factory brake controller. I tied the one that is along the fender well in. That one I guess is for an aftermarket brake controller. Will have to see if there is a wire under the master cylinder.

Thank you.

you need to have your key on to work any of the lights or trailer brakes controls at the rear of your truck (bin there done that) :smash:

This is true for the brake lights and trailer brake controls but not the 12v trailer hot feed, as long as the fuse is in the box and the wire is hooked up, it is hot all the time. I have the light in the cap wired this way and I do not need the key on to turn the light on.

Did you get it to work?

Sorry, yes. Thank you very much for the info. I'm in the middle of moving the office I work for and I'm in charge of the network, so I've been a little busy to say the least.

I hooked up the one originally between the fender and the fuse block. This is for after market trailer controller which I didn't think it would come with since I got the integrated. When I took a close look under the master cylinder, I found the other wire. Hooked it up and wouldn't you know I have 12v.

No you don't need the key on, in case anyone wonders.

Lights work amazing in the bed. I purchase :Bed Lights

When things settle down, how about firing up a few pics of the light install? I would appreciate it.

Thx
