I'm planning on getting the driver's side done by the end of the week if the weather cooperates and is not too cold. I'll post more pics as I go along.

pretty cool...i'm still pissed gm coulden't take a hit and pay for people to get this fixed, its not one of those problems that was caused by drivers or neglect

What symptoms led you down this path? Was it mysterious coolant consumption? Was there any excessive enging noise? Did your exhaust studs come out okay?

I had coolant loss with no leaks and it developed a stuck lifter. Exhaust studs came out surprisingly easy.

My truck has been well taken care of since I bought it brand new. On the positive side to all this, I'm taking care of some maintenance issues while it is all torn apart. New belts, idler pullies, spark plugs, wires, water pump, radiator hoses. This should not have failed like it did. I too wish GM would make it right, but I'm 80K miles outside of the warranty. The other side of this is, I'm getting some great experience working on my truck. After this is done, I'll have a little more confidence taking on other repairs.

Great pics!!! Thanks for posting! I would love to know where you got your heads from and what else you bought to do the job right.

I got my heads from Ritchie Automotive Machine in Capital Heights, Maryland. The owner is a very old friend of my father's.

The heads came from a company in Canada.

This is what I've bought so far:

New lifters

All new gaskets

New head bolts

New exhaust manifold bolts

New spark plugs

New spark plug wires

New radiator hoses

New water Pump

New idler pullies

New serpentine belt

New A/C belt

GM shop manual for the Silverado

Torque wrench

Torque angle gauge

I live in D.C. Does he also just sell regular auto parts or is it exclusively a machine shop? Always looking for a good parts store. I've had luck at Auto Parts Depot on Silver Hill Road in Marlow Heights.

He's a mainly a machine shop. If you are looking for a good auto parts store call Bob at Capitol Heights Auto Parts. He's been there forever and knows what he's doing. Rough neighborhood, but good parts store.
