6.0 Gas Oil Consumption

Hey guys just curious if I'm alone in the world here or not... I have a 2001 GMC 1500HD with the 6.0 and 76,000 original miles. I bought the truck at 62,000 3 years ago and average roughly 5,000 a year. When I bought it I didn't notice any oil consumption or leaks and was running valvoline 5w-30 conventinonal oil, at the first oil change I switched to Amsoil 5w-30 and noticed it is a 1/4-1/2 qt low every 1,000 miles, is this normal? The last oil change I went to mobil 1 10w-40 hoping that would help the consumption but no change. Is it possible its the synthetic oil causing this or am I worrying too much? There is no leaks on the truck and it dosen't appear to be buring anything at start-up.

sounds like you got an issue bud, i go almost 10 000 kms on Mobil One and its right on the line still...doesnt burn any. check for gasket leaks....

I have an 01' that started using oil at 70k. Also had the knock, rattle issue since 9k. At 100k burned 1qt in 600 miles. I bought this truck new and have had it into the dealership several times. I finally had enough and called GM. Mine ended up needing a motor. Tech told me the rattle issue was cam/lifter issue and the oil burning was scuffed cylinder walls. I had changed the oil every 3000 miles since new and did all regular maintenance... anyway GM helped pay for my motor. Yours doesn't sound as bad as mine. But when I put synthetic in it did use oil alot more.. I would stick w conventional oil. Old post on here had said you can use lots of oil and not see it out the tailpipe cause the converters are that efficient. Hope this helps.

Mine is at 200K +, and it recently has started to burn (and leak) about 1/4 qt every 1,000 miles. I know I have some gaskets and seals to replace, but that is my springtime project.

Ran like a top until the recent issues, but what do you say for 200K?

Good luck!

I have used Mobil 1 in my last 3 trucks with now problems. Unfortunately I don't think its the oil choice.

had an05 6.0 that by 180 000 kms was having the low oil light come on before each oil change was due nearly 2 liters low and no sign of it out the pipe or on the ground

I have checked several times and definately do not have any leaks under the truck. From the time I've owned it I've kept up on the necessary maintenance. Your quote here is interesting and sort of my hidden fear, I do have a little chatter on cold start up that lasts for 10 seconds or so. I am not sure about the cylinder scoring but it could be a possiblity. The truck still holds good oil pressure, 50-60psi at idle and seems to run good. I'm probablly going to switch back to conventional to minimize the consumption and see what happens from there.

the noise i had also would rattle when warm, 1200-1500 rpms, would sound like marbles in the center of the motor. It always had good oil pressure. I can't say for sure, the dealership never tore the engine down. Look on you tube there are some vids of engine noises on the ls style engines. Overall if yours is just using a little oil, 1/2 quart every 1000-1500miles, I would say that is ok. I think at the time these engines were built, the engine bores might have been the the upper end of spec and the pistons on the lower end of the spec, which when put together make for a real loose piston to bore fit. Which will accelerate scoring in the cylinder because of the piston rocking in the bore. and might not be noticeable till there is some miles on it. Hence scoring of the cylinders and some slight oil burning. Try the conventional oil and let us know. I can't see it hurting and its cheap enough. Good luck, let us know. as far as oil leaks just double check the valley pan, right under the intake. and almost forgot . There is an updated PCV valve that minimizes oil burning. The new PCV just has a very small hole in it. No spring and ball in it. Part is around 10bucks i think...there was a factory bulletin for this..

sounds like you have an issue other then oil....although if your motor does have an oil consumption issue, synthetic can cause a bigger loss...because synthetic flows alot easier

Matsrat, do you know the bulletin number or the new PVC part number? I'm going to give this a try and see what it does for me.
