have a 2004 5.3l silverado 4x4 with a timing chain cover leak did some research and found a specialty tool (j 41476) is needed to align the cover and front oil seal with the crankshaft. is this tool absolutely necessary or just an aid for easier installation or can a substitute be used? also need to know if the oil pan needs to be removed or just the front two bolts under the timing chain cover. getting mixed opinions on this. appreciate any help before jumping in.

The tool is critical. If you dont use the tool you have no way to center the cover to the crankshaft and the front seal will leak. Oil pan removal is not required.

Lol Ive done a ton cam installs on lsx motors never used tool. Put on cover get bolts snug but loose enough to move if needed. Install pulley then snug down bolts. Never had one cover leak. Hell didnt mine 45k miles ago. There isnt much room for the front or rear cover to move.
