Onstar. Someone Perpetuating Some Sort Of Fraud.

I never renewed OnStar after the" safe & sound " plan expired in Dec 2004. I was backing my 2004 dually into my driveway and heard some people talking through my Onstar connection. OnStar operator answered and some man complained about his wait time. The operater ask him for some information. He gave MY company name (spelled it for them), He said HIS company had TWO trucks with OnStar. and MY zipcode. and started to give my address. I tried to enter the conversation, but they couldn't hear me, so I pressed the OnStar button, hoping to get their attention...didn't work. I got an OnStar commercial, then pressed OnStar again for an operator and was eventually told that I couldn't connect. My OnStar system is apparently analog, while the newer one's are digital.

OnStar has been advertising a contest to win a new GM car. You press the OnStar button on a disconnected OnStar system, you reach an operator and register for the contest.

I tried the OnStar on my 2002 Dually...no connection.

I tried the OnStar on my 2007 Corvette. I talked to an operator. Told her this story. She wrote it up for the "Fraud Department" to investigate....And signed me up for the contest

My Question. Has anyone else experienced this, and what could be the purpose...registering for a contest to win a new car 100's of times after you get hold of an OnStar database???

Thanks for any responses.

So I dont really follow, you are a victim of identity theft and you figure they are just using it to enter a contest but you got to the enter the contest so now you are not so concerned about the identity theft?

I just thought that it was odd that someone was going through that much trouble to enter a contest multiple times using other peoples onstar connections. OnStar said thgey would investigate. I have 4 vehicles with disconnected OnStar. Apparently 3 of them are the older analog and won't make the connection. I contacted OnStar through my 2007 Corvette. They are investigating. Maybe the culprit was up to something BESIDES taking my oportunity to enter the contest 4 times.

I always keep an eye on my credit cards etc. Identify theft IS a big problem, and I am concerned. That's why I filed a complaint (verbal) with OnStar.

2004 is analog so it shouldn't even work?

The question mark at the end of your statement leads me to believe that you ask a question. But reading your response leads me to believe that your telling me that 6 year OnStar shouldn't work. I think that the older ones can be upgraded if I wanted to subscribe to their service.

Some of the older ones can be upgraded. All the Onstar equipment gets changed out. If OP didn't have his analog switched out for digital I don't see how he picked up the conversation. I don't believe Onstar is even using the analog at all anymore.

In fact GM issued an order to completely disable older Onstar analog systems after GM turned off their analog equipment. Without being disabled there was/is the problem of running down the battery when the vehicle system might try to "phone home". It would continue to attempt to connect until the battery ran down. When the vehicle was in a GM facility they were to check and disable it.

That 2004 Truck hasn'r been to the dealership since Feb 2007.

You should have received a letter about disabling it permanently because of the potential battery run down problem. I purchased the digital upgrade package very cheap and installed it in mine.

Give us an update when you hear back from Onstar.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
