Stupid 4wd.....again.

Yet again, the "Service 4wd" error is on the DIC. Replaced the selector switch a few months ago and it seemed to cure my problems. Went to the dunes last weekend cruising around in 4 low. Went to leave and switched back to 2wd - heard the Tcase doing it's thing, but the selector was still showing 4 low. Put it in Drive and it lunged forward. Gave it some gas, only to find out it was still geared low, but the front tires weren't spinning. The selector switch lights up when the key is on, so I attempt to put it back in 2wd. I can hear the Tcase trying to disengage, but much shorter than it usually takes. Then the lights go out on the selector switch and the "Service 4wd" light pops up and I'm still stuck in 2 low.

 

So what I'm saying is....How can I get it out low, what's causing this (encoder?), and what should I replace and/or inspect to hopefully prevent this stupid mess. Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had the same problem with my 05... ignored it until i got stuck in 4 low.

 

Disconnected the battery and turned the truck on/off a few times till it finally went in 4hi. Then, i disconnected the fuse for 4wd so it wouldn't happen again (mine actually shifted into 4low by itself when i started my truck after getting gas).

 

If you can pull the code, you'll probably have C0327 for the encoder sensor. $70 in parts and about 45 minutes to replace.

When I had it scanned a while back, it did just what you said. Would randomly place itself in 4wd after shutting it off and all that. Last time I got a C0040 - rear wheel speed sensor. If I could get it OUT of low I'd gladly take it to the shop. But paying 50 bucks to get it there on the rollback just isn't in my schedule.
