Turn Signal Problem + High Beams Quirky

Hi all!

 

I have this problem that many seem to have solved by changing the flasher relay, which is that the 4 blinkers (hazard) will come on when I try to signal left. It'll do it 1 out of 10, but lately, it's been getting worse. Also, I've got this problem where high beams only work in "flash to pass" mode (when you pull the flasher lever towards you). They won't work if I _push_ the lever.

 

The dealer said it's something inside the steering column, but I want to make sure I tried all I could before checking in for a 450$ repair

 

Any ideas ? (My truck's detail are on the left)

To be more precise, does the flasher relay have anything to do with the high beam circuit ? If I fix the flasher relay issue, do you think it could also solve the high beam issue ?

What is common to signal, 4 way flasher and Hi beams is the swith on the stearing column, called "turn signal combination switch". ~$100.00.

Can be done by home mechanic, but be carefull, might need to remove the stearing wheel, maybe not if you have right tools, and be warry of the airbag.

I recently have done this on 08 Impala, which has the same switch like my 03 Envoy, so I suspect the same switch is used on many year/model GM. I did not have to remove the steering wheel, but I used short torx bit to remove one of the two screws holding the switch. This switch is used for signal, 4 way flash, Hi beam and flash to pass, wiper control and cruise.

I still have the old switch, can sent you picture of it, my old switch (08 Impala) had Hi beams on all the time, after I took it out and try to repair, it almost worked, except on FTP when the right signal is selected. To get to the switch you need to take out the top and bottm covers of the stearing columns, pull the tilt lever before that etc.

Haynes manual would help you with that, schemaitics and how to replace the switch. Get a new switch and change it, or get help in changint it or get the dealer to fix it.

Get an aftermarket turn signal-cruise- washer unit from 1aauto.com They also have a video on U-tube on how to install it yourself. About $85.00 and 3 hours labor will solve the problem; mine is a 2003 GMC Yukon XL. My problem was the high beams were coming on when I made a right turn signal at night (with the low beams on - was flashing high beams at people randomly every time I put on a right turn signal). The trickiest part was removing the lower shroud around the steering wheel - hard to see from underneath - I thought there were T20 or T25 bolts holding it, when if fact there were no bolts - it just needed to be pushed apart. Problem fixed!

The video was helpful. A few tricks, like putting the steering wheel up and down and up and down, and turning power on to get the column gear shift lever pulled down, and pulling the steering tilt tab directly straight out, then pushing it back in.....no bolts.

Something in the steering column ? Does your dealer receipt say what the tech wrote ???....IT SHOULD !!!

 

Seems you don't trust them.... Why take it there then ,

 

It's called a multifunction switch btw
