Have a new 2011 chev 5.3 with 3800km ,just curios as to when people are doing the first oil change.Dealer will do it at 10,000 km but i feel it should be sooner and they said it has to be DEXOS approved oil (WARRANTY).Any input.

As with all oil change posts you will find many different opinions. Follow your owners manual. Personally I change out my engine oil and oil filter at 500 miles. I do used oil analysis and I don't like having all that material in there for much longer than that.

As for dexos 1 approved oil. You should be able to find it at your local auto parts store. It is supposed to be used in all 2011 and newer GM vehicles.

Wolfy got a new PF48 filter at 1000 miles and I topped off the oil level. I did a complete change @ 2500 miles to Pennzoil Platinum (dexos approved). Plan on running 5000 miles and will change every 5 to 6 K from then on. Easiest Dexos oils to find are Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker State Ultimate Durability. Right now the Quaker State is a steal for synthetic @ Wally World. $17 for a 5 quart jug. I've never been a Quaker State guy, but all the used oil analysis on Bob is the Oil Guy for Quaker State Ultimate Durability looks great. I may have to give it a try. Besides Pennzoil and Quaker State are both owned by Shell-it's probably close to the same stuff.

Look for API SN on the star burst symbol of the oil of your choice and that will qualify for the DEXROS by GM. Don't bother with long drain intervals if you love your truck. Change it every 3,000 miles to be on the safe side.

HOGWASH. Why throw away money every 3000 miles? Run it up to 5000 miles, send in for an oil analysis and let them tell you how long you can likely go between oil changes.
