2005 Yukon Xl - Hard To Start

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am have problems with the yukon starting... After cranking for about 5 second the engine finally does start and runs fine.

I put a guage on the fuel line test port and turned on the key but it showed no pressure (I cant hear the fuel pump run)... When the engine does start the pressure shows about 35PSI.

Anyone else run into this??

Fuel sending unit failures are common with our vehicles, and many vehicles with the fuel pumps in the fuel tank, especially if you often drive your vehicle with less than 1/4 tank of fuel as the fuel serves as a way of keeping the pump cool. Also the fuel pressure regulator has been known to go out on the GMT-800s which can also cause problems your describing.

Isnt the fuel sending unit used to send the current fuel level to the fuel gauge?

If so, then how does that prevent the fuel pump from coming on when the key is turned on

Fuel Sending unit = fuel pump, and the module that controls the fuel gauge. It's attached to the unit. Always a wise idea to replace both when working on one or the other. FPR is under the hood.

i don't run my truck past half a tank ever, for the above reasons....GM fuel guages seem to drop like a rock after the halfway mark

Is there any way to test the fuel pressure regulator?

Anyone know exactly where this is located?

FPR is in the tank, part of the pump assm.

I thought the FPR was under the hood somewhere. At least on the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and 6.2.

DO a search for FPR or Fuel Pressure Regulator on here. I know there were a ton of posts on that in years past.

I really appreciate everyones input on this.. I guess I am SOL and will have to replace the fuel pump/sending unit. Is there any cheaper place to purchase this or am I stuck going to the dealer?

You can purchase rockauto.com

You've double checked output pressure, key on engine off? If it's below spec. it's pump time

Don't cheap out, buy a quality pump.
