Removing Brakes And Rotor Trouble

I have a new 1/2" impact wrench rated at 580 ft.lbs and 90 psi rating of 4.7 SCFM. Looking for compressor and am wondering before I buy one (33 gal) if this is even going to get the job done. Both the caliper bolts and the pad holder 18mm bolts are pretty rusted to the truck. Am I wasting my time with this 1/2 inch impact or do I need something larger?

Thanks

I agree with the others. A breaker bar will make this job much easier. The longer it is, the more leverage you will have, making it easier. Good luck.

man up to a big boy snap on gun instead of that little gun or bust out the breaker bar

Snap-On is a waste of money for an at-home/DIYer. I worked in a dealership for about 3 years and in that sort of instance when you're using them all day long then I do think Snappy and the other tool truck brands are worth it. But unless you got money to burn I'd pass on buying SO for personal use. Especially the impact since it's probably just a rebranded Ingersoll.

Yeah, the breaker bar did the trick on the 18mm bolts, however, one of the POS T55 hex bolts won't budge and is now stripped. Have the caliper in the vise and even a vise grip to the pin won't do the trick. FUUUUUUUUDGE!

just did mine on all fours the book says the fronts are rated at like 211ftlbs or somthing with the yellow locktite on the bolts (youll see what i mean when you remove them) I used a Snap on 24" or 2' breakerbar with a 1 or 1.5" diameter pipe about 3-4ft in length to break the bolts and used a Husky 650 FTLBS 1/2 inch impact to do the rest (which i bought thinking i would not need a breaker bar and pipe)

Good Luck :)

you talkin about the bolt that holds the rotor in place when on the assembly line? if so I actually just changed my rotors and brakes and had the same problem, had to get an extractor bit, worked wonders, if you have a decent powered drill you can drill the bit into the bolt then take a deep socket and it comes off so easy. if thats not your problem then try it anyways lol

Wow T55. I'm glad I read this before my Friday brake job- largest I have is T50. Guess I'm headed to the store.

Yeah, finished the job a couple of weeks ago. Ended up replacing front calipers (one piston was garbage). Needed the breaker bar and the Ingersoll did the rest. REPLACE the T55's with (I believe) 18mm caliper pins (bolts). Makes the next brake job a heck of a lot easier!

Thanks my brothers :flag:
