4x4 Won't Engage.

hello.

i own a 2002 sierra 1500 5.3.

I am having troubles with my 4x4 not engaging. When i press the 4x4 buttons, the lights will light up. I can hear the transfer case engage. but the truck remains in 2wd. The weird thing that has me stumped is that it "acts" like its in 4x4, such as "hops" while turning real sharp. I replaced the 4x4 fuse. When i replaced my rear axle the truck was on the stands. so i engaged the 4x4 and all the wheels spun. so it got me thinking that my shift motors were getting weak. so i would like any help possible.

p.s my friend told me that there was a "clutch plate" in the transfer case that can get wore out and prevent the 4x4 being locked in.

Now I understand that your truck is newer than the one I had, 1994 K1500 4x4 Z71, but I had the same problem where it engaged and acted like it was in four wheel drive, mine had the good ol' pull handle in the middle, but the light where it says the other two wheel would not light up, turns out on actuator had gone bad so i went to a pull a part to see if it would fix it and sure enough it did. So if that model and year has something like the old chevy I had then look in a repair manual for actuator. And about that whole clutch plate, never heard of such a thing but I dont know much about the newer 4x4's.

thanks for the help. is the actuator and the front shift motor the same thing.

The only shift motor I know of is the front axle shift motor, and no I don't think they are the same the actuator just engages the fourwheel drive, u can usually feel and here when its actuated, well the older ones you can.
