Power Steering Fluid Flush/change

Recommended Posts

I have read a few threads on PS flushes and it seems like the most popular method is detaching the return line on the pump and draining and filling at the same time while cranking the wheels.

My question is this: Are there any other methods people successfully use? On my G35 on use a fluid extractor to drain the reservoir and fill with clean fluid, turn the wheel a few times with a running engine and then repeat 2 or 3 times. That process uses about a quart and it gets the fluid looking brand new. In fact, I took it to the dealership and thats the process they use (minus the repeating 2 or three times).

Would this method work on a 2002 Yukon Denali or do I need to go a different route?

Thanks in advance for your advice/help/

I'd just take it in and have it done professionally. They have the right equipment and can ensure it gets done right with ALL the old stuff getting out of the system.

That's what I have done in the past but since I started doing it myself on my other cars via the methodology I mentioned, which is the same way the Infiniti dealer does it anyway, I am saving a ton of money. If I can save $150 to $200 I rather spend it on gas or other toys. Thus my question.

Cool. Let me know how it works. For those that are interested, here is the calculation to show the ratio of new fluid to old fluid using this method and draining and filling 6oz's at a time. This assumes the old and new fluid mixes completely between each exchange. If you drain the reservoir completely the first time, your results will be significantly better as you have less than 12oz of fluid in the entire system that is not held in the reservoir. Hope it helps.

And as mentioned previously, this is essentially the same thing they do at Toyota, Lexus, Infiniti and Nissan dealerships when you have one of those $150 Power Steering Fluid Flush Jobs.

Oh and one last thing, this is what I use for my extractor on my G:

Remember to put the front up on jack stands and let the wheels hang when you turn it from stop to stop. This will put less stress on the pump and the rest of the front end.
