Rear Differential Question

Recommended Posts

2008 Z71 w/3.73 limited slip differential. Just turned over 60,000 miles. Went in, today, for my regular oil change. Tech checked differential lube. Found some metal on the magnetic drain plug. Said he wasn't concerned about the "fuzz". He did have some concerns about a couple of flakes of metal.

Chevy dealer was booked, today. Went to the Ford dealer across the street for the oil change. Told the tech, before he started, that this was the first time my Chevy had been in a "strange" service department. I appreciated his bringing the metal to my attention. But, he didn't know what was covered by Chevy's warranty and what the Chevy dealer would recommend.

Question 1: Is the rear differential covered under the 100,000 mile drive train warranty?

Question 2: What can be done at this point. No noise. Nothing that would lead me to believe there is an issue. Can the dealer tell anything without a complete tear down? Will they do that under warranty? Or, do I wait until something breaks and hope it happens before the 100,000 mile point?

Thanks for any advice or assistance.

I think the diff is under the drivetrain 100k warranty. The fuzz is normal. A couple small flakes may be normal too. I would take it to the chevy dealer, have them document it, and change the fluid.
