Sporadic Noise From Rear End

Lately I have been having a strange noise coming from the back end,sporadic no consistency to when it does it except moving from a stop.

It is a weird creaky- moan that you can hear with the rotation of tires or axle to a certain speed then nothing.Sometimes louder than most.

Like I said it is not consistent as to when it happens....

Not real sure what to make of it....

I had a 2003 F150 that had limited slip clutch packs wear out that had a similar sound...

Interesting videos on you tube about the G80 locking diff.

Wondering if anybody has had to replace the friction plates and if so what were the symptons?

Asking the better half if she thought the noise sounded like metal on metal and she said yes....

Noises don't seem to get alot of attention here. Tell us more about your truck.

 

What year is your truck, How many miles, have you had any work done recently, disk brakes or drum brakes in the back. When do you get the noise?

 

 

• Does the the noise only happen when you start the truck moving or does it happen when you running along with no torque on the drive train.

   

• Does it start when you are in a turn and go away when you are going straight

   

• Does it disappear if you let off the gas.

   

• What happens if you are driving down a flat street and you turn the key off.

   

• Does it change if the road is smooth or very bumpy

   

If it only happens in a turn it could be a bearing on its way, On the flats with no stress on the drive train maybe u joints, Could be the back brakes need some work, or something in the rear end, maybe the gear lube is low.

 

I am just throwing a couple of cents out there. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in on this one.

Recent work?

Had lots of recent work. Tranny pulled last week to change leaking main seal gasket and torque converter gasket,had the noise before this.

Brake pads replaced a few months ago but noise started well after that.

Only time I hear it is pulling away after stopping,maybe 4 rotations with the noise then nothing.does not do it all the time either which makes diagnosing that much harder.

No vibration when it makes this noise either.

Never noticed it at slow speeds turning,usually just pulling away from stopping at light throttle.

Sounds like U-joints. For $15, it's worth a shot IMO.

Like Hockey pro said it could be U-Joints. I took my truck + noise to my local mechanic and he had it figured out within a block and a half, it was u-joints, but slightly different symptoms.

 

Just my 2 Cents; From what you have described it almost sounds like the back brakes drums-pads and maybe some dirt-dust-rust in with the rear drums that has built up since your brake job. It settles when you are stopped and then works its way around when you get the truck moving. Maybe take the back drums off and see if there is a bunch of brake dust built up.
