GM, THE WORLD’S LARGEST automaker, said it had 15 reports of crashes as a result of problems with the power steering, including three injuries but no fatalities.

The lower pinion bearing in the power steering gear could separate, GM said. Most reports indicated that drivers experienced an intermittent loss of power steering when turning left, usually at low speeds.

Some drivers could experience higher resistance when turning left, followed by an unintended power assist to the right, GM said.

The recalled vehicles include the 1996 to 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire small cars; the 1996 to 1998 Chevrolet Lumina, Chevrolet Venture, Oldsmobile Silhouette, and Pontiac Transport minivans; and the 1997 to 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix midsize cars. Of the total 1.5 million cars, about 1.2 million are in the United States and about 240,000 are in Canada.

Saw in the news today that GM is recalling 1.4 million truck motors...

Power steering unit is the motor?
