Driving without mufflers

About 10 years ago I installed headers on my 78 Camaro.  I lived about 25 miles out of town.  The next day I drove the car with open headers from home all the way to the local Pep Boys to buy a set of cherry bombs with a welded-on flange that would bolt right up to the header collector.  Cripes that dang car was loud!!!  I had a severe headache by the time I got to Pep Boys.  I didn't think twice about buying a couple of wrenches while I was there and bolting the cherry bombs on right there in the parking lot!!!

My friend who's fixin' to sell me an '85 Silverado 4x4 is (or atleast WAS) talking about taking both the muffler(s) and Catalytic Converter off. I'm kinda weary about him doing that if I'm going to buy the thing from him.

Why would you be weary?  All my friends have their cat's off and most run open exhaust.  I've got no cat's and run dual flows.  Long as you get a K+N air filter and a new pcv valve you should have no trouble keeping a steady idle with exhaust like that.  Its just some people don't care for all the resounce in the cab, although I personally enjoy being loud and annoying the h&ll outa people.

sounds like the ppl that annoy the f&(*k out of us each night going up and down the road.

I can not stand any exhaust resonance in the cab at all,  I'd rather listen to my stereo than noisy ass exhaust

Heh, our neighbors just don't care for the noisey burnouts and smoke shows we do up and down the road.  The loud exhaust is just an added bonus.    Oh btw, for open exhaust just make sure you run enough pipe that you have some back pressure.

Not running any mufflers may sound cool but its a good way to screw up a engine, a engine requires a certain amount of back presure to operate properly and when they don't have enough back pressure they will start to burn valves.

I ran my truck with open headers one day while It was waiting for the exhaust to get put on

I also drove it with straight pipes for a week or so after I yanked the old exhaust off.

It was WAAAYY Y YY too loud for every day driving.   Still is w/ the super turbos, IMO, but I have headers and 2.5" pipes, I just need to deal with the fact that it's gona be loud :D
