Right Turn/ going over large bumps

Recommended Posts

Ok I have basically checked ever bolt under the front end.  Whenever i make a right turn (mainly) or go over a large bump i hear a loud THUD in the front end (kinda under the floor board it sounds like at times).

Any ideas?  I am at my wits end  ???

Thanks :D

This may sound dumb...you checked your Shock lower shock mount and the top shock tower??? What about the tierod ends sound ignorant but I've heard of them going bad and having enough slop to make weird noises...

Could it be the "steering shaft clunk"? Sounds like what mine was doing before the steering shaft "lube" TSB. There is a new fix which involves a bearing replacement. Either upper steering column or steering gear.

Also several guys have found loose upper control arm bolts after an alingment.

Let us know what you find.

I had the steering shaft clunk.  That is fixed.  Also checked the bolts didnt find anything loose.  Also the shocks were fine.

It sounds like the front end is falling apart.

Thanks for the ideas guys.  Friday im going to give it a good look over

Just a thought ...  I used to have an S-10 and a common problem was the torsion bar cross member bushing.  It is located between the frame and the cross member and is constructed similar to a motor mount (rubber isolated studs)

Anyhow the bushing would tear and what you would hear is the cross member bang on the frame, usually when making a tight turn and hitting a pothole.

Your problem sounds similar - I would check the drivers side bushing with a large pry bar between the crossmember and frame.

Hope this helps

Ok i checked everything in the front suspension.  Everything looked fine.  No loose bolts or play in anything.

oh yea i had an 8 foot piece of 11/16 thick 2 1/4 wide trim fall on my front fender when i had my truck in the garage.  it was like slow motion.  It hit the side and i watched it go all the way down to the fender flare

I had a nice scuff.  Hopefully the zaino will take it out

I'm telling you, go get your truck aligned.  Used to have the bang noise when turning into the driveway when you hit the bump from the roll curb and then you stop in the driveway and you could here the bump.  I let mine go long enough that I could see wear on the tires and at the end the upper a-arm bolt was loose.  Initally when I heard the noise the bolt was not loose either.  Just a suggestion.  Cost about $50 to have it aligned.

Cost about $50 to have it aligned

Yea i am putting off an alignment I know i need one but i wanted to wait through winter.  Maybe i should get it done and quit putting it off.

Only bad thing is it cost me like $100 last time

Ryan, I was thinkin about this as I in the dentist chair today...   Have you cranked your torsion bars up?  If so have done it recently?  Maybe you're topping out the suspension and hearing that?  Or maybe you lost a top out bump stop?   Last thought I had was that you could have a busted sway bar mount, grab it and try and hang off it...

Finally think about anything you've worked on recently or any crazy stunt driving you've been up to.  ;-)

Good luck,

I had a front swaybar bushing go bad on my old G20 conversion van.  When I'd hit a bump, it would sound like the brake calipers were loose.  You might want to check the 2 brackets that hold the rubber bushings that the front sway bar passes through behind the front bumper, (if you already haven't).

I have had the tbars cranked up for over 13K miles.  It is not topping out that was my first though.  I did check the sway bar and it was fine from what i could see.

As far as stunt driving only thing i could think of was my mom flying over speed bumps in the morning when she takes my bro to swim practice but she said she only goes over 1 slow (and i believe that).
