Rear End Question?

Hey guys , I'm kinda new here and had a question about my rear end. I have a 03 gmc cc lb with the big daddy 8.1l and 5 speed ally with 4.10 gears but I don't know what kind of rear end I have does any one know if its a full float or semi floating rear end. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Easiest way to tell, remove hub cap and look at the hub behind the hub cap. If it has a smaller circle of bolts in the middle of the wheel studs, that is a full floating rear axle. Removing those smaller nuts will allow you to pull the axle out without even taking the wheel off.

To put it sort of simply, a semi-floating axle puts the load on the axle shafts themselves, so when you add weight by a load in the bed or a trailer, you are putting the load on the shafts and at the same time, trying to transmit power to the ground. The shafts have c-clips in the carrier to hold them in.

 

Full floating axles have no load on the axle shafts, other than transmitting power to the ground. The axle shafts are held in with the outer bolts, and have no c-clip in the diff to retain them.

Odd. I have to wonder why they did that instead of using the 3/4 ton HD axles. I believe the old 2500 LD's were the same way..
