Engine Dies In Anything But Park

Ok, have a great problem that evidently nobody has ever experienced, and I've been told can't happen. Have a 2000 Sierra ECLB 2500 4wd 6.0/4L80E. Was driving and shifting just fine prior to the engine swap, and now any time the shifter is moved out of Park, the engine quits. It doesn't stall, it isn't loaded, the tach drops to zero and the engine spins down just like the key was turned off. Put it back in Park fast enough and it will catch and continue to run. The trans reports it is in 2nd no matter where the shifter is, but with the engine off can be commanded into gear with a scanner. Have replaced the PRNDL switch with no change. Curiously, when the engine is spinning down, the battery light comes on, and sometimes says CHANGE ENGINE OIL. Have been looking over the schematics for this, and haven't found anything yet. Has anyone had this problem? Do you have any idea what would cause this? Thank You.

if it runs in neutral...push it down a small hill and drop it in drive and give some gas, scan for any codes again

Engine swap. Maybe PCM needs to be reflashed so new sensors will talk to any existing sensors????. PCMs are VIN # programed.
