looking for info on a Transmission Swap?

 

Have: 2000 GMC Sierra 4.8 Auto.

 

Found A 1996 gmc Sierra Transmission was hoping you could tell me if it will fit may 2000 sierra.

 

If not could you please suggest what transmissions would fit. Please and Thank You.

Just curious why you want to do this........... You may just be putting in a worn out trans to replace your worn out trans then complicating matters by getting one that you may have to jerri-rig to fit.

 

If your old trans is not "Broken" (as in still working but has issues)..... you may be far better off pulling it out and having it rebuilt. As long as there are not broken hard parts, the cost shouldn't be much higher than buying a junk one.

 

If you do buy a junk-yard trans, I would highly recommend taking it to a trans shop and having it inspected before you drop it in. At least have them pull the pan, install a new filter, new front pump seal and new tail-shaft seal. When they take the pan off, they can tell you whether it is worth installing.

 

I would highly recommend installing a NEW torque converter if your old trans has any broken parts in it. If either trans has trash in it, using the old torque converter may damage whatever trans that you install. There is no way to clean out a used torque converter.

if you are keeping the truck,consider the GM rebuilt tranny ,...............3 YR warranty ,cant beat it , your cooler will be flushed for warranty purposes,,,, GMs machine does this very well, as this was the reason for it .....coolers plug up with crap and crater trannies,,,,the flow rate thru the cooler is recorded on the work order when your new tranny is installed or original is rebuilt ,,

 

i did after every rebuild and replacement tranny,,

yes they do if they have a decent setup and an experienecd guy or they will sell a rebuilt unit .....i put one in my currant truck before leaving the general,and bought one for my old suburban before i got into GM ,that 700r4 lasted along time and was abused lol
