99 1500 5.3 4x4 4l60e Questions

hey all new guy here !!!

 

just bought a 99 gmc sierra 1500 z71 4x4 with 288 thousand km's

 

got it super cheap ..truck as a lil beat up body

 

but the main issue is the tranny...no reverse

 

so i did some reading ...either a fluid issue in the valve body , worn lo gears or the dreaded sunshell i think lol

 

so question is how do you figure out which one is the problem without ripping open the tranny ??

 

im just looking at driving this in the winter only so im hoping i can not drop a ton of cash into it ..

 

any advice would be awesome ..

The only way to find out is to open it up if you never worked on a trans before have a shop do it,Another you can look for is burnt trans fluid see how it smells,tastes,and looks.If it tastes sweet then its bad.

the fluid is burnt for sure

 

i did a shift kit in m old car once lol

 

burnt fluid would tell me its not the sun sheild ??
