Am I out of line here? (No pun intended)

So I believe I need a new fuel pump for my Silvy, but I had a thought...

If I just unplugged the in-tank pump and installed a HP inline pump... would that be easier? I don't believe the old pump being left in the tank would cause a problem, and an inline pump would be 100x easier to install and maintain. Or am I out of line here, or would this be a possible solution?

Just food for thought I guess, I still have a few weeks before I will be installing a new pump. Thanks guys!

The external pump would have to suck thru the tank pump. Would it work? I have to think that replacing with an in tank would be best, but maybe not the easiest.

you won't be able to suck fuel through the in tank pump with it off.

I'm not sure what you mean by "easier to install and maintain" - the pumps in these trucks typically go for 100,000+ miles, which isn't too bad (don't let your truck get under 1/4 tank too often or it will be much less). You drive a truck, a truck is WAY easier to change the pump on than a SUV. Just a few bolts, tail light harness and the truck bed can be lifted off for easy access. I've done about 6 pumps and it's really not a big deal.
