American Racing Headers Long tubes Dont even think of anything else in my opinion they really make a difference

I agree. My headers made the biggest impact on hp/tq. I can feel it really strong in all rpm ranges. I would say 25-35hp, and 40 lbs of tq before tune.

My truck is a 2002 2500HD with the 6.0 motor. Ive had flowmasters on their for almost 6 years now (can't believe they haven't rusted out yet) and want the truck to sound a little louder but still be able to pass state inspection. Need to have the cats and mufflers.

My question is; what would headers really do? Help more exhaust leave creating a tad more power? How about sound, would the truck sound better/louder?

How about short versus long? I really know nothing about these that's why I'm asking.

if you want to be truly legal, you must go with short tube headers. Long Tube headers will require you to relocate the catalytic converters. Federal requirements are listed below. Now, most people assume "if a catalytic converter is present, it's good to go", and sometimes this works, but technically it's incorrect and you should receive a fail.

Rules for Replacing Converters

In 1986, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued new guidelines for the construction, efficiency and installation of aftermarket catalytic converters. All CleanAir converters listed in this catalog have been designed, tested and manufactured to meet this policy.

In addition, CleanAir converter listed in this catalog is appropriate for use under the current requirements of the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.).

E.P.A. guidelines state that replacement converters may be installed only in the following situations:

1. The vehicle is missing a converter

2. A state or local inspection program has determined that the existing converter needs replacement

3. Vehicles manufactured prior to 1996 must have more than 50,000 miles, and a legitimate need for replacement must be established and documented

4. In cases of OBD Il-equipped vehicles (1996 and later), the O.E. manufacturer's 8-year/80,000-mile warranty must have expired and a legitimate need for replacement must be established and documented.

Please note that Federal law prohibits removal or replacement of a properly functioning O.E. converter.

When replacement of the converter is appropriate (as outlined above), the E.P.A. further requires that:

1. It be installed in the same location as the original

2. It be the same type as the original (i.e., two-way, three-way, three-way plus air/three-way plus oxidation)

3. It be the proper model for the vehicle application as determined and specified by the manufacturer

4. It be properly connected to any existing air injection components on the vehicle

5. It be installed with any other required converter for a particular application

6. It be accompanied by a warranty information card to be completed by the installer.

Where can you buy them and how much are they? I want loud but not open headers. What muffler / resinator do you suggest? I would also like both header exhaust to come out passenger side in front or rear tire. Do I need a y-pipe or will it be alright with header to muffler to exhaust pipe for each side?

Pacesetter and some other brands sell ypipes for longtube headers i think the OBX setup is like 450.If you want a nice rumble at idle and want to hear when your on it,get a spintech 9000 and run a high flow cat.

I am removing the cats also. Not going to use any cats. I would like to have something similar to the Ford Lightning side exhaust. I don't know what is the least expensive way to achieve what I want. I want loud. I don't want to lose power and torque. Y-pipe? H-pipe? X-pipe? No crossover pipe? LT headers > mufflers > 2.5" exhaust to passenger side + add tips or no tips ?

Or LT headers > y-pipe(or ???) > single muffler > 2.5" exhaust to passenger side ?

Anybody do something like this or any advice? I am open to suggestions but can not afford expensive solutions. :)

go with a single exhaust.LT's,ypipe, your not going to like the unwanted attention its going to attract running LTs,no cats, and finding a muffler to tame it down is pretty damn hard. Some ppl are running 2 mufflers with magnaflow and 1 bullet and its still too loud. But its your truck i would say look into borla they sound great with LTs and no cats.

If you want quiet, go with a magnaflow big body 22"+ or a borla pro xs otherwise the smaller mufflers will sound like ass and will be too loud/raspy.
