2006 gmc sierra crewcab sle ABS light SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM

I stopped to get gas yesterday and when I started my truck after I filled up the ABS light came on and my DIC showed Service Brake System. It went off after a few minutes (or when I shut off the truck) and never came back on yet. I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem could be. I tried searching and looks like it can be several things. I have 86000 miles and I was about to change out the brake pads when I got a chance but want to know what this means?? Thanks.

It means a big expensive fix if it stays on. The computer for the anti locks is not cheap.

It will not affect the vehicles performance just that the ( rear brakes) in which they control only, will if you brake hard will not release alowing you to skid....

Thus a lot of people leave it alone and get use to driving like the older truck styles braking .

The Front Brakes are not affected by the computer anti locking device. It is mainly in wet and snowy conditions where the ass end may pass you if you hammer the brakes.

sorry scoob, abs works on all 4 brakes and the message is a way to tell the operator that a trouble code is in the abs system ,it doesnt mean the EBCM is toast

op,get it scanned and diag'd

It could be that one of your sensors just messed up and isn't sending information to the ABS computer. I had a wire in the harness by the right front wheel rub and cause a short that made it seem like my system was dead. A good shop should be able to find the error code and fix it for you.

Thanks govtec4, my older 93 gmc had none on the front. I thought they left that system alone on the newer ones.

Keep up your good work!!!

A squirrel chewed through the wheel speed sensor on my 2010 truck a couple of months ago and it generated a message on the DIC about servicing ABS and stabilitrack. I guess it's probably not the same cause on the OP's truck because his light went off after the next restart.
