Hey guys, just got a GMC Sierra 2500HD 8.1 w/ Alli and I am totally new to trucks    But figured if I was gunna get a truck.. go all out, oh and the deal was right!

 

Here is my question... what is the difference between a 2500 and a 2500HD? Also, the window sticker said Locking rear differential on it... what does that mean to me?

2500 vs 2500HD

 

Basically the HD is beefed up.  Rated higher (9200 vs 8600).  I dont know if they make the reg 2500 anymore.  Back between 00 and 01 the silverados looked different one had a different front end and hood.  

 

Locking rear diff is something which lets say you are on wet pavement and the rear wheels slip up to a certain MPH the rear axle will lock giving you better traction.  Here is a link to eatons website (they manufacture the locking rear diff) they have a video on their site which shows it in action.  Its a very nice option which isnt very expensive

2500 and 2500HD are two different platforms.  The first is similar to the half ton platform, though it does have eight lug axles on it.  Motor availability is the 5.3L or 6.0L, with the only configs made now being the extended cab shortbed or reg. cab longbed.  The HD comes with the diesel, 8.1, or 6.0L, slightly higher ratings, and a completely different frame.  

 

Locking diff in it isn't the same as a true locking diff found on the aftermarket, GM uses a tight limited slip and calls it a locking diff.  Basically it turns the rear wheels the same speed until finally one tire has so much more traction than the other that it finally breaks free and sends the power to the the spinning wheel.  Sounds bad, but I highly doubt that you will ever come into the situation where that will affect you at all.
