OGM1 vs. Factory vs. Universal navi comparison chart

After being asked about a million different times the difference between the factory GM navi and the Advent OGM1, I finally decided to spend some time and do a comparison chart that shows some of the major differences between the two, along with typical universal navi units as well.

The chart references the older (2007-11) GM navi (typically made by Denso), and NOT the new 2012 HDD GM navi, since although the new unit is much improved over the old one, it has a completely different plug set than the older units and so is not easily (or cheaply) installed in NBS trucks that didn't come with navi from the factory.

I tried to be objective and point out the good and not so good of both units, but unfortunately, the Advent came out on top in just about every way you can compare them. Since there are enough owners of both units in this forum, I would ask that if you see anything that needs to be changed in the chart, please let me know, since I really do want to be objective in presenting the info. If anyone's on the fence regarding either unit, hopefully you can use this chart to help make up your mind using good information...

I like mine with the exception of two things. XM won't start once in awhile, turn all off, key out, open door and start again, it will work on second try. I hate the backup camera screen, the writing is in the way to hook up to a hitch. As I pull a trailer quite often for the business the camera is worthless. I was told they were going to move the writing to the top. This has never come to pass. If I had known they were not going to change it, I would not have bought the system.

Can custom POI files (like GPI) or custom locations be added to the Advent like you can a regular GPS or are you stuck with POIs that are included in the map updates?

I also like my Advent OGM-1 alot and the backup camera I got from Walt. I would like to know if advent is still working on things like better chime management, faster boot time, Ability to view camera when driving, move warning to top and, use factory mic for Bluetooth. I saw this poll (Advent OGM-1 Owner's Poll) in this forum and these things are most important to a lot of people. I think if they can take care of some of these things they would be even beter.

I have fixed the view backup camera when driving (Thanks to Walt, this forum and, relays) and, use factory mic problem, I have goten used to the warning sign sence advent has changed it to the red letters and I can see the hitch OK now(would still be nice if they could move it to the top of the screen). But there is nothing I can do with the chime management unless advent can fix them or provide a way to turn off the chimes from the raido. Then I can try to install a PAC OS-4 product or something like that to produce the chimes. The faster boot time is also up to advent.

We've asked the same question about moving the camera warning, but have been told that they can't move it - in fact, they reduced the opacity of the box around the text to make it more useable specifically due to the input from our customers on this forum. If you haven't done the new updates that have made that box almost transparent, you should.

The XM issue is being investigated currently, but the problem is trying to make it happen. If you can make the problem occur on demand in your truck, PLEASE post a video showing it! We're all trying to make it occur on demand so the factory can diagnose it!

Yes, you can add POI's to the system using the NaviExtras Toolbox software.

I love my Advent OGM-1 I got from Walt. This is my first time to post on any website but I wanted to go out of my way to say how happy I am with the OGM1 and Walt. Background, I had a 2008 Chevy Avalanche with Factory Navigation installed. I have been unhappy with my factory system for the past 4 years. It does not support Bluetooth or iPod controls. I was planning on spending $40-50k on a new truck or car to meet my meet my high technology needs.

I shopped around on the Internet and local Car Stereo stores and could not find anyone with the right product or the expertise to help me replace my Factory Nav unit. I am not really all that handy and I did not want to take on the installation myself. After speaking with several different places I realized most of the car stereo stores know less than I do about replacing a GM Factory Nav. unit. After watching the video's posted on ADC's website I decided to take on the install myself.

I ordered my OGM1 from ADC and received it on time and for a great price. I begun the install process and everything went very well until I got to the point of plugging-in my new head unit. I had one extra wire harness and decided to call Advent for Technical Support. They answered my call in a timely manor and I asked my question about the installation. The first words out of the technician’s mouth were that the Advent OGM1 would not work if I were replacing a Factory Nav unit. I was obviously upset so I decided to call Walt at ADC to verify the information that I was told by the Advent Technician. Walt told me the Technician was incorrect and walked me through the installation process of the phone. So within 20 minutes Walt had all my questions answered and my Stereo up and running. (BTW, all this information was posted on ADC’s website but I had failed to look prior to calling Walt.)

The OGM1 is working great. All the features are working as advertised, Siri on my IPhone 4S even works through my stereo now. My 2008 GM truck now has better technology than a brand new 2012 truck leaving the assembly line. I spent a little over $1,000 to save $40,000 on a new truck. I could not be happier.

Walt,

I did the update this weekend. And thanks to you, I changed the startup logo to a new one that I like better. Thanks for the logos.

The warning in red is better. However, it is still in the way, and a pain in my azz.. LOL

I must say that the sound part of the radio is better with this last firmware update......

    • 287,500 Mile Service   8/13/2026   Reset Fuel Trims   Since the work done in the previous post there was a good improvement in response in all areas except right after a fill up where the LTFT would go -20%+ for about four miles while the STFT was near neutral. Before the work they both went very negative for a few miles after a fill up but act normal thereafter.    We did a systems check of the vapor recovery system for functionality and ability to hold a vacuum. That checked out fine. But this doesn't mean the charcoal canister is dead in the water. Testing that is next up. For now the reset of the fuel trims.    I intentionally shorted the fill exactly two gallons to eliminate any chance of filling the canister. On start up the trims were behaving normally until I got up and rolling where the LTFT went -10 / -11%% but the short was + 2 to 0%. Within a mile the the STFT offset the LTFT and by 2 miles they were neutral. HUGE improvement but still not hunky-dory.    I'll watch them for a few days. Perhaps another tank where I will fill completely to 'first click' and compare. Meanwhile on the hunt for a new canister and I'll toss another purge value at it for good measure. Pending the outcome of the canister test that is. Progress of any kind is welcome.    Fuel economy improvement with bringing hole #3 back to the living was a noticeable bump to the positive. Even on the few miles I drove after the refill I already see another bump up by the trims reset.     She's purring like a kitten with a warm bowl of milk.    BTW, adding 50 rpm to the idle took the majority of the negative timing out on cold start up and leaned the cold idle. No longer burbles in the cat. What a dumb way to heat a cat.
    • Yeah, shame I can’t really get that filter easily anymore. Running a PureOne. Your fave!    TAN would be neat to see. Confirmation I ran it too long probably. 🤣
    • My son and I both bought new trucks in 2017. Both of us immediately put Truck Covers USA American Roll Covers on our trucks. My son still has his truck and it never sees the inside of a garage. We live in Alabama, so not much snow. My truck was my daily driver and was in the garage when I wasn't driving it or at work. No issues with either cover even after almost 9 years. About a year ago I sold my truck to my brother and bought a 2025 Silverado 2500. The second thing that I put on that truck was a new Truck Covers USA cover. They are very well made and have a very positive locking system. I looked at a Retrax and my concern was the way that the cover locked to the rail. BTW, the first thing I put on the new truck was step bars. Those new trucks are high!
    • The Allison 10 speed torque converter doesn't "lock up" like the previous transmissions. It has 4 operational modes; open, slip, transition from open to slip; transition from slip to open. I have an Edge CTS3 monitor and I monitor transmission torque converter slip. Step on the gas and you get a little slip. Take your foot off the gas and you get a little negative slip. I have not found a way to display the torque converter mode beyond that. My Edge CTS3 also displays something that our trucks should already display, the current gear. I also monitor throttle body position and engine load. If I see the engine load getting too high, I'll manually drop a gear.
    • Nice result. Your filter is working well  I'd have like to have seen the acid number for this sample. Curious type that I am.
