Viper Alarm/Remote Start ??

Does anyone have experience with a Viper 550 Remote Start/Alarm system on a newer GM truck? My family gave as a Christmas gift one of these to a very good friend who really wanted the remote start option more than anything and this person got back to me and said they would like to return it because they found out that it A: voids the warranty B: when installed takes away the function of the air bag system and on star communication system.

I have my suspicions that the person wants to return the product, take the money and buy something other than an alarm system and is using these faults so that I hand over the receipt.

Can anyone shed some light on this. I went to the Viper website and they have no e-mail contact info and they direct you to a install dealer who of course is going to tell me everything is fine. Figured the forum could help me out.

My friend installed an alarm just like any vehicle and its completely seperate from his Onstar etc.

He doesnt have remote start though, so thats still unknown.

I would really like a Remote start so Hopefully someone knows the details.

I put a Viper 550ESP on my 99.  It did not affect my air bags or any pertaining system whatsoever.  I checked the truck with AutoTap for any active or inactive codes after I installed the alarm and there were none.  Now as far as the alarm affecting OnStar, I dont know about that.  I really dont know why it would though.  It may void the warranty I think.  If it isnt a dealer installed item I think it will void the warranty.

I have a Viper 790XV and it did not affect Onstar, airbags or anything other than the use of the factory security. If you lock w Viper and then unlock with factory remote the Viper alarm is activated. I bought it primarily for the security features but the remote start is very nice especially now in the winter.

mine burnt out within a year so  I'm not sure about the viper products anymore...  the brain is completly dead, and it wasn't under warranty so now it's a big paper weight in the dash.

I cant see how remote start would void the warranty, and plus what part wouldnt they warranty the starter? Who cares.

Although some dealers are so dumb they would say a remote start voids the warranty on a rear axle seal.

Your warranty is only as good as the dealer you take a truck too.

Is UNGO still in business??

the remote starter and security system have nothing to do with on-star, Teh warranty issue is different though here is how the law works:

Any aftermarket electronis will not void te warranty as long as the electronic piece is not the cause of the problem for warranty repair to be done.  Most 12 volt shops offer a lifetime warranty on the Directed remote starter units... some shops like the one I work in also offer a lifetime warranty on our installation, to include any problems with the car resulting from our equipment.

I just had a viper 791Xv 2 way paging alarm w/ remote start instaled in my 05 hummer with no problems.( it took the viper tech 7 hours) The dealer thought it was a good idea and that it will not void the warranty. On star was not an issue.

Keep your factory alarm active along with after market for added protection, but you will have 2 remotes to deal with.
