Ok today my family and I were at my brothers swim meet.  Something came up and i told my grandpa he should do a canon ball off the diving board.  He looked at me like i was crazy.  He said i cant swim.  I was like HUH?  You were in the NAVY he said yea but he failed swimming and almost drown in HS.   ???  ???  ???  Well then he got to telling me that when he was in training there was a polio scare (dont know the exact yr but i think he said 58) and the pools were closed 2-3wks after training started (great lakes training center and many other places).  They were supposed to get training wherever they were shipped to but he was shipped out to sea so he never learned to swim.  His shipmates threw him overboard somewhere and he almost drown again (my grandma told this story haha).  He was on the USS Irwin during the Korean War.  During xmas he brought out all his photo albums and there were some cool pics.  One that stuck out (wasnt cool) was his commodore was wounded and they had pics of him being transported off the ship and the actual room where he was hit (black and white picture and it looked horrible blood everywhere).

I am still in shock that he was in the navy and cant swim.   :flag:

I've always been a swimmer. I musta learned when I was about 3 or 4.

I have seen people join the Navy that can't, but they learn in Boot Camp.

Boot just teaches the basic. In Aircrew School, we had two guys nearly drown and in CPO Training, one of our guys could just barely make it through the swimming part (kinda like Jeremy).

Went to Navy boot camp in 1968. I passed swimming with no problems. I 've been a swimmer all my life. I did see several guys nearly drown in the navy pool. They had to stay in the water for a specified time treading water. The weak swimmers would try to grab the side of the pool and the instructor would push them back to the middle with a long bamboo pole. The instructers did not wnat to go into the pool and they didnt want to have send anybody back a week in training to take swimming again.

I have been on the water all my life. My farther was a fishermen off the coast of Maine and had me out on the boats from the time I was 4 years old. I have been in the Navy for almost 20 years now and I don't swim very well. The only water I want to be in is the shower.

I'm with you, I enjoy being ON the water more than in it. :jester:
