Oil pan on 2003 Sierra 4.8l

I am changing the oil pan gasket and can't get the pan out. It looks like I might have to loosen the steering rack. Is that right? I just did one on an 05 5.3l and it was easy.

A second question, there are two round supports from the crossmember to the frame. One is straight and the driver side one has a couple of bends. It doesn't look like it's been hit, but I wondered if that is the way it's suppose to be.

Ok, I'll answer my own question. You have to unbolt the steering rack from the frame and disconnect the power steering lines from it. You can then drop it down enough to get the pan out. You don't have to disconnect the steering shaft or the ball joints.

On the 5.3, does the pan just drop down and out? I need to do the gasket on my 6.2L, but I'm procrastinating since I didn't know what it entails....

Yes, at least on an 05 5.3 (2WD), the pan comes out pretty easy, after you remove the tranny cable bracket (torx screws on top).
