I have a 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 6.5 Turbo diesel and the problem is that it wont shift from park and when it does and i put it back to park it wont let me until i keep on trying until it lets me again i wanted to know ur opinion on what it might be cause ive read that it can be the btsi, or the brake switch, but my brake lights work fine and if it is the btsi how do i renive it since the steering shaft is in the way.

My 98 K1500 5.7L if was the brake light switch. Different set of contacts than the brake lights. As for replacing it, it helps to be a contortionist.

cause if its the brake switch thats causing the problem its going to be a pain to get to it since the sterring shaft colum is in the way of getting to it and lets just say im a big man i was meant to work on semis not pick ups

If it was the brake light switch cruise wouldn't work either

Could be your BTSI(Brake Transmission Shift Interlock).Wifes '99 Burb was doing the same thing,I just disconnected the rod. It's under the dash next to the right side of the steering column.#61 in the pic.
