Facts about M1 and Castrol Edge

Does anyone have any Lab Reports for their engines running Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge? I've been thinking about switching from Mobil 1 to Castrol Edge, but was trying to get an idea if it would be worth it or not? I've been hearing that M1 has been causing extra engine wear lately compared to what it used to, but haven't seen any facts on this. I've also heard that Mobil 1 EP is a higher rated oil versus the regular Mobil 1 so I may just switch to that idk? I guess the talk of more engine wear with M1 is due to a change in their formula, but I haven't seen any facts on this either. Anyone have any info?

Now that I have an engine that has 40k versus the 4.8 with 110k, I ran M1 high mileage. Right now I have regular M1 and will put M1 EP in next

All I have used the past 5 or so years is Mobil 1, but I also like Castrol a lot, but quit using it whenever I went Synthetic. Now that they have Edge and it's been out a few years I've been debating on trying it.

Go over to Bob Is The Oil Guy.

That's where I was reading about the rumors of Mobil 1 changing their formula and not preventing wear as much. Guess I'll look around some more.

Daryl,

There was a time that Mobil 1 was returning higher levels of iron in the used oil analysis reports I read at BITOG. However, it seems like I haven't seen as many lately, which makes me think if there ever was a problem, Mobil got a handle on it. I posted a link to this info in another thread, but the Petroleum Institute of America did an analysis of top name brand and store brand synthetic 5W-30's a few months back. The Castrol syn had a really good TBN which is an indication of the amount of additive, but it wasn't as good as others in cold temp performance. If those concerned about oil burning are looking the Shell products (Pennzoil, Quaker State and Shell) had some of the lowest NOACK volatility numbers. In all honesty with just about any of the oil's reviewed your truck would be set for many oil related trouble free miles. If you're happy with Mobil 1 I wouldn't worry one second about continuing to use it. It may not be the absolute best in every category, but it's tough to beat overall. As for me I think I've settled on Pennzoil Platinum.

Well, I was going to try out a few different brands of oil like the Pennzoil Platinum, and Castrol Edge, but I decided to give Mobil 1 Extended Performance a shot. I like the Mobil 1 so I figured there wouldn't be a problem using EP. If we had the Pennzoil Ultra around here I would have definitely given it a shot before getting the M1 EP.

From what I have seen on Bob is the oil guy there isn't much difference between the synthetic oils anymore, they are all just about as good as the other. So pretty much whatever I wanted to run would be fine.

^^This^^

Mobil 1 EP should be an EXCELLENT choice. Like you I wish Pennzoil Ultra wasn't so hard to get/expensive anymore.

I don't have any lab results but I'm on the stock motor with 312k miles and all I've ever used is castrol gtx 10w-30. Tried the synthetic but this old engine can't keep it in it. My dads 04 sierra is approaching the 300k mark and he only uses gtx.

I have a 2011 Z71 with 74,000 miles on it. I've run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic since day one. At what mileage would you guys recommend switching to the Mobil 1 Full Synthetic High Mileage, or should I just stick with what I have been using? I change it myself every 6,000 miles, sometimes 6,500. I know they say you can go longer than that, but I can't bring myself to do it. Thanks for any feedback.

Just a note about Mobil EP. See disclaimers on label next to the *

Not saying anything negative about Mobil 1 but it does not recommend 15,000 miles if you fall under those conditions, severe service.

I'll just go by the DIC. It usually takes me 10000 miles before it hits 0%

That's how long I'm going to run mine for, and send it in for an oil analysis.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
