It's now less than 30 days til I turn 18, and guess what, I'm still not eagle yet.

All that I have left to do is to write & file the paperwork and I'm done. And get my final 2 Merit badges signed off.

So I have a question for you Boy Scouters out there.

What's the closest you've ever heard of an eagle scout cutting it?

I have actually known a couple who have submitted all of their paper work like the day before their 18th birthday. Luckily they were given an extension on the Council Eagle board so they still got their Eagle...technically you are supposed to pass your board and everything before you turn 18.

I had my Eagle board in March of 1999, about 10 months before my 18th birthday, so I was well within the limits...

Just get that stuff done ASAP and get the paperwork in yesterday. :thumb: Don't wait until the last day...just burn through everything and get it in with at least a week or two to spare.

Alot of the other Scoutmasters I talk to say that I only need to get the paperwork in before my 18th B-day, the rest can be done afterwards.

Maybe I'm just in the same boat as your friends.

Things are a little different now then when I made Eagle in '73. Back then you had to be awarded it BEFORE you turned 18, now you must have your everything in and I am almost positive you must have your board of review COMPLETED before you turn 18. Once the board is done, your 'package' can be submitted after you are 18.

RULE 1: DON'T WAIT Get it done now in case there is a discrepancy or an error in "national's " documentation. We had one young man almost lose out on eagle because of a documentation error on his part (he missed a change in merit badge requirements by a month. He had to go out and complete the new one, and complete his board of review before he was 18 which was only 60 days away. He just made it with only 10 days to spare.)

My understanding is that if you don't complete everthing due to an error on YOUR part, you can loose out and not get an extension. If there is a legitimate reason for delay, out side of your control (like in a rural area and a board can be be setup in time) an extension may be possible. BUT, as a potential Eagle scout, you should have known and planned in advance for this kind of possibility. My advice is DO NOT bet your Eagle award on getting the extension. I have seen them denied.

I am with the others, don't wait any longer. However it is good that you did not get it done too soon, like I did, I will forever regret that choice. I believe I was 13, maybe 14 but I am pretty sure I was 13, when I got my Eagle. Then I stayed in scouts for another six months and vanished My scout master was one of my best adult friends, and since I quit I have lost touch with him. However I am expecting to attend the scout meetings once the summer comes, as an adult. My scout troop has had 30% of its scouts overall make Eagle, that is how dedicated my Scout master is, if you are willing he will help you in every way possible. I am in debt to him for the rest of my life, he was/is a great role model for me even to this day.

I too got my Eagle award early (just before I turned 15). I stuck around long enough to attend the National Jamboree in '92 and then faded off into the distance. It's been a while since I've done anything with the scouts, but I guess I'm looking forward to getting back into it someday when I have a kid.

I dissappeared from the scouts around '94. Never really liked the outing or the meeting. I prefered the hang out in my garage or someone elses garage and work on cars. But if the Scouts would have found out I am an Atheist, the would have kicked me out anyway. So, I saved them the trouble.

Madfish, I have no problem with Atheists, but I know alot of scouts do.

The funniest thing that ever happened on a camping trip was this kid who had already became an Eagle, brought a .357(yes, the gun) on the trip. His patrol leader saw it and was going to go tell the scoutmaster. While the patrol leader was gone, the kid with the gun put a sack of weed under the Patrol leaders tent, trying to frame him. Well the scoutmaster was pissed off about the gun and got even more ticked off when they found the weed under the guys tent, and the funny thing is everyone new the first kid was the one who put it there. what freakin dumb@$$. The kid got kicked out of scouts, but the thing that boggles my mind is the fact that he was an Eagle Scout!- Sorry madfish the Atheist comment brought that story back to my mind.

There was alot complaining about it by all of the parents for about a month after the kid got kicked out. It surprised the #### out of me though. That was about 5 years ago. I am just glad he decided not to use the gun, he never told anyone why he brought it, still kinda scary.

I was a scout in the late '60s early 70s and now am back in it with my son. (cub master for 5 years and now COR). Being in the Marine Corps, I didn't have a lot of time for it.

(do you know the only differences between the Boy Scouts and the Marines, the Boy Scout s have adult supervision BUT the Marines can play with bigger weapons! )

Being the heyday of the love and drug generation, we only really had one incident with drugs, but it was a big one. One scout (15 at the time) brought some LSD and pot on a camping trip. When our scout master (a former county sherriff) got wind of it the next morning he kicked the boy out of the troop. He couldn't do anything else because he didn't actually find the drugs. The drugs had already been 'used' the night before.

I ran into this kid about a year later, he was all kinds of strung out. Looked like the walking dead. Dropped out of high school, in and out of jail. real bad news.

But: a few of us met him again later in the year. He was cleaned up and completely off drugs. When we asked him how it happened all he would say is that he "found Jesus". He had become a born again christian.

I understand he later went to college and got himself a couple of degrees. I think he eventually became a lawyer and drug counsoler.

Got the paperwork in today.

Scheduled my board of review for March 10th.

I told my district advancement chairman (the one who reviews all the eagle stuff in Richmond) about me being 18 this week and he acted like it was ok. So I guess I'm in the clear.

Good luck man, I still remember my board of review... I was lucky I was such a good kid when I was younger, I had my sixth grade English teacher, a neighbor, two family friends- one was my ag teacher in High school, man, it seems like there were others too, man I wish I would've been older...
