Preference in Synthetics

Without a doubt Mobil 1 seems to be the choice for synthetic oils. In my quest in deciding whether synthetic or regular oil I have come across some convincing arguments for Royal Purple oil. Anyone have experience in using it, or for that matter any other synthetic (Castrol, Red Line....??)

Welcome to the forum.

I have not had any experience with royal purple nor do I know or have known anyone that has used it.

You might also try reading up on Amsoil. You can learn more about it by clicking on the Amsoil banner here in the forum or just send me an email with any questions you might have.

Amsoil was the first company to come out with an API certified synthetic back in 1972. It is American made and was founded by a retired Air Force pilot. Amsoil is based out of Superior WI. and they have a full line of lubricants as well as other automotive care products.

Amsoil is also one of a few companies, Neo oil and Redline are a few others that offer extended drain intervals.  Mobil currently does not recommend an extended drain but I understand that they are working on offering that here in the future.

Amsoil is a really good oil and they have been around a long time. All their oils exceed the minimum standard set by the API.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. :thumb:

I've used both mobil syn and Royal purple. I haven't run the reformulated mobil syn though. I prefer the RP over mobil and mobil over anything else. I run the mobil in my wifes vehicle and Rp in mine. I have been running it for the past 6 years and love it and had had no problems at all. Amsoil runs along the same lines as  RP. Which is better who knows. RP is easier for me to get than amisoil. Napa used to carry it or be able to order it for you but it's been awhile since I've gotten it from there. I get mine from a local race shop for 5.25 a quart.

Hope this helps,

Lar

I run RP in my daily driver. I chose to run it mainly because I had seen some impressive results from a company that tested their products in heavy equipment. I'm running a 10,000 mile drain interval in my little Buick. It's quieted down the lifter noise somewhat over the Castrol I used to run, and it starts better in cold weather now than it did 30,000 miles ago.

Why don't you check out #701  5W-30 Schaeffer Synthetic blend  www.schaefferoil.com  . This is $2.50 a quart compared to $4.50 for the mobile1 .Mobile 1 is good oil, I run it in my corvette and have no complaints whatsoever with it, but after comparing the two by the technical data on both of their websites I put the shaeffers in my truck. My dad services a fleet semi trucks and they are running the schaeffers 40000 miles on their diesel's between oil changes. They then have it sent out and do an analysis on it. They will not use anything else.  Not trying to steer you away from Mobile 1 , like i said it is great oil, just telling you about another alternative with the blend since you were undecided.

I use Redline - it's made somewhat close to me, here in the SF Bay area.  I heard about it from people that offroad, and since I started using it, I've heard testimonials from people that run it in race cars, motorcycles, and fleets of cop cars.  I've been very happy with it.

I use Royal Purple in my engine and tranny and I love the stuff. It dyno tested to give 8 more rwhp in a LS1 vette than the vette with Mobil1 and prolong. Keeps the engine running realy clean, and I've noticed better MPGs over mobil 1 too.
