Rear Coil Spring Change

Recommended Posts

Hi All - I need your help/advice.  I am planning to replace my stock rear coil springs (on a 2000 2wd Yukon) with Bilstein springs after I installed Bilstein HD shocks and it lowered my back end a bit.  I have two questions.  My objective is to raise the back end back up to at least where it was, but I was also thinking about doing something to get an inch or two more out of it.  So, is there another spring that will do it by itself, or can I go with the bilstein spring and add spring insulators and/or spacers.  If I go this route, how much will it effect my ride?  Which brands would you recommend?  Should I go with one or both insulators and spacers?

I also plan to raise the front torsion bars to get another 1-1.5 inches in front.  Then, I'm going to get a bigger tire when my Firestones wear out.  Will I be able to safely fit a 285/75 R16 on there?  I have 270/65 R16 on there now from factory. Bilstein cautioned me against going too high with spacers because I could top out the shock over large bumps. How real is this risk?

What would y'all suggest?

My second question is: as far as the procedures for the change, is there an easy way to do it without detaching the rear axle vent hose, disconnecting brake lines and unbolting junction block etc.?

Anyone out there who has changed their coil springs, please give me the details on your change, as well.

Thanks for your help.
