Battery life?

Trying to prepare for the winter weather here in MO. I do not drive my truck much, but after taking it to wally world, the battery was low on charge because I do not drive it often enough to maintain a charge. So the tester said, battery must be charged to determine condition. Well, the battery has a date of 2/07, should I replace? I drive around to where I get a charge and take it back to Wally World so they can retest it?

 

It is a Sears Die Hard battery and I have had no problems with it otherwise.

I'd replace it. Even fully charged, it probably won't test well. Almost 7 years old.....

its done and it lasted the estimated time !!!

I just swapped out my stock battery, the truck was built on FEB 2006. So it lasted me a good long while. I also have on of those harbor freight solar chargers hooked up and plugged into the cigarette lighter, to help insure the battery at least gets some trickle charging.

I got a Sears Gold to replace my factory one. Part of the reasoning was that my battery died in the parking lot Mall, and Sears was right by. I walked over and they said it would be about 3 hours, so I bought a battery and swapped it out myself in the parking lot.

So, does anybody have good reviews of the walmart "everstart" batteries?

Thanks for the pdf, I think I am going with the Die Hard battery.

Better check their warranty policy. I heard on other sites, they were doing away with the prorating of batteries. After free replacement period, that's it.

dont know about yall but I went with diehard platinum 34/78 since it was made by enersys and branded as diehard. Dont know if they sell em anymore.

Today after sitting overnight, around lunchtime I went out to start my truck and nada. Stone dead, wont even bring the lights on. Cables tight, nothing left on or plugged in. Its cold out, (-30 celcius, -22F) according to DIC, but with windchill its -46. I get that things are harder to get started, but yesterday temp was similar and it fired right up. I have been noticing a general decline in the battery performance, as in time with key on engine off, before DIC displays "battery low, start vehicle"

Not that I normally sit and let my battery die, but at the gas station a few weeks ago I had my truck off waiting to fill up and the light came on. (maybe 2 min with key on, lights on)

Reserve capacity should be like 40 min with this truck. A week or so ago, a headlight burnt out and when I replaced it, with 10 min of key on lights on, (checked lights operation, then talked to other techs at my work) the truck wouldn't start. 1/2 hour on 10A charge fixed that. I should mention this is a 2011 truck, 2-1/2 years old and this battery was replaced in Feb, 2013. (Under warrantee) Now I have a commuter car I bought for while \im in trade school 2 hours away, and I have brought that home to use this week, and in the meantime I put my truck on 2A charge so I can check the truck for draws, (just like I did last year) and check the CCA of the battery. (tester at work)

I think Im going to find the battery fails, and the truck draw is negligible. And once again the dealer will replace my battery under warrantee. (barely, 3000 miles of bumper to bumper warrantee left)

I am shocked at the poor battery life of these AC delco (GM) batteries. my parents ford (swearword, I know) van has the original battery, (9 years old) and starts fine.

 

Im going to ask GM to provide me with a better quality battery for my troubles. After all, I planned to buy a 14 this coming fall. (or else a 13 Duramax,If the right deal comes along)

 

Anyone else experience crappy battery life? I know with the battery in the crappy location it is it makes boosting it miserable, and I bought this truck because I was tired of the problems accompanying driving a 10 year old truck.

I have always had good luck with the Walmart batteries. One went bad on me after two years and it was free replacement for me. (so maybe 23 months) I do know it was close to the free replacement ending. Anyway, one battery going bad after two years out of at least a half dozen bought is fine with me.

 

Read the PDF and my experience shows correct. (and also shows why the Advance Auto battery in my truck needs replacement every two years. :( next tme I have to go pro rated on that thing I'll just go to Walmart. it's cheaper. (or Costco since I have a membership there.

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
